Amana dryer making noise
Dryer noises are best sorted by the parts that carry the drum: worn rollers thump, a worn idler pulley squeals, worn front glides scrape, and a blower wheel with debris rattles. Loose objects, an unlevel dryer and balled-up loads are owner-level causes worth checking first.
Quick checks first
- Check pockets and look along the front and back rims of the drum for coins, buttons or screws.
- Make sure all four feet are firmly on the floor and the dryer does not rock.
- Separate tangled or balled-up loads, especially sheets.
- Note when the noise happens: at start-up, all the time, or only with heavy loads.
Loose items and the load Owner check
The documentation for heat-pump models lists small objects caught at the drum edges, an unlevel dryer and a balled-up load as the first causes of rattling or vibration. Coins and screws trapped between the drum and the front panel scrape and click; a balled-up sheet makes the load bounce. These apply to every dryer type and are easy to rule out.
Thumping after the dryer sits Owner check
A rhythmic thump that fades after a few minutes can come from temporary flat spots on the drum rollers when the dryer has not been used for a while, as the heat-pump documentation notes. A thump that never fades, or gets louder, points to worn or damaged rollers.
Rollers, idler pulley and glides Technician
The drum rides on rollers at the back and on glides or a bearing at the front. A belt idler pulley keeps the belt tight. Worn rollers rumble or thump, a dry idler pulley squeals, and worn felt or glides scrape and can leave black marks on clothes. A technician may replace them as a set, since they wear together. Access requires removing the drum.
Blower wheel and motor Technician
The blower wheel pulls air through the drum. A sock or lint clump caught in it, or a loose wheel on the motor shaft, makes a rattle or roar that follows the motor rather than the drum. Worn motor bearings hum or grind. A technician separates these by running the motor with the belt off.
This stage requires professional testing. Full diagnosis involves hazards such as live line voltage, gas, a sealed refrigerant system or microwave high voltage. Do not attempt it yourself.
Gas burner sounds Professional only
Applies to: Gas dryer
Gas dryers click when the valve opens and make a soft whoosh when the burner lights; that is normal. Loud popping, repeated clicking without ignition, or a roar from the burner area are not, and need professional testing because they involve the gas system.
Repair cost
| Repair | Typical range | Labor |
|---|---|---|
| Dryer drum rollers, glides and idler pulley replacement | $190–$420 | Moderate |
| Dryer drum belt replacement | $180–$320 | Light |
| Dryer drive motor or blower wheel replacement | $250–$550 | Heavy |
| Gas dryer valve coil or gas valve replacement | $180–$420 | Moderate |
| Gas dryer igniter and flame sensor replacement | $180–$370 | Light |
Typical total ranges for the Las Vegas area, parts and labor included. The final cost depends on diagnosis, the exact model, parts availability and whether other damage is found.
When to call for diagnosis
Call for service if a squeal, thump, grind or scrape continues with an empty, level dryer, or if a gas dryer makes unusual burner sounds.
