Repair or replace?
Most appliance failures are worth repairing; some aren't. The decision depends on age, the diagnosed repair, its cost relative to a new unit, and the rest of the appliance's condition.
Rules of thumb
- Get a confirmed diagnosis before deciding; many failures that look major turn out to be moderate parts.
- A common rule of thumb: when a repair costs more than about half the price of a comparable new appliance and the unit is past half its expected life, replacement deserves serious consideration.
- Built-in and premium appliances (KitchenAid, JennAir) justify larger repairs and later replacement than freestanding units, because replacement involves cabinetry fit and higher prices.
- Sealed-system refrigeration repairs are the major decision point for refrigerators, freezers and ice makers; check for remaining manufacturer sealed-system coverage first.
- Consider the condition of the whole appliance: rust, cabinet damage, prior leaks or several worn parts lower the value of any single repair.
- Factor in installation: built-in, stacked, closet or over-the-range units cost more to replace than to repair.
- Safety problems such as gas leaks, scorched wiring, or a microwave with a damaged door are stop-using conditions until a professional inspects them.
- Lifespan ranges are averages; Las Vegas heat and hard water can shorten them, and good maintenance can extend them.

Not sure what failed? A diagnosis turns a guess into a decision: the same symptom can be an inexpensive part or a major failure.
