Amana dryer shuts off before clothes are dry

A dryer that ends the cycle with damp clothes is being misled by its moisture sensing or settings, or by poor airflow. The service documentation checks the dryness setting, the lint screen and the vent before the moisture sensor. If the drum stops mid-cycle with the display off, overheating protection or the motor is the concern.

Quick checks first

  • Clean the lint screen and check that the outside vent hood flap opens.
  • Raise the dryness level on automatic cycles, or use a timed cycle for heavy items.
  • Wipe the two metal sensor bars inside the drum with a damp cloth to remove softener film.
  • Make sure the dryer is level so small loads tumble across the sensor bars.
  • Dry very small loads with a couple of similar items so they contact the sensor.

Dryness settings Owner check

Automatic cycles end when the sensor reports the chosen dryness level. The documentation lists the dryness setting first: a low setting ends early, especially for thick items with damp seams. Heavy and light fabrics mixed in one load make the light items read dry before towels are done. Raise the level or use a timed cycle.

Lint and vent Owner check

Applies to: Electric dryer, Gas dryer

When airflow is restricted, the exhaust gets hot quickly and the control can read the load as dry or cycle the heat off. The documentation lists a full lint screen and a clogged vent next. Lint and vent restriction is a fire-safety matter, not only a drying-time problem. Clean the screen and check the outside flap; have the full duct cleaned if airflow is weak.

Sensor contact Owner check

The moisture sensor is a pair of metal strips that the wet clothes touch as they tumble. Softener residue insulates the strips, and very small loads or an unlevel dryer may not touch them often. The heat-pump documentation specifically suggests leveling the dryer so the load contacts the sensor strips.

Moisture sensor and thermistor Technician

If settings and airflow are fine, the documentation tests the moisture sensor circuit, and on some models an adjustable dryness calibration a technician can change. Exhaust thermistor errors can also end cycles early. These checks need the service mode and internal access.

This stage requires professional testing. Full diagnosis involves hazards such as live line voltage, gas, a sealed refrigerant system or microwave high voltage. Do not attempt it yourself.

Dryer stops completely Professional only

If the drum stops and the dryer goes dark before the end of a cycle, that is a different problem. A motor with an overheating protector, a thermal fuse that opens on a hot electric dryer, a loose power connection, or a control reset can cause it. These require professional testing of the motor and power circuits.

What the service documentation checks on Amana platforms

For this symptom, the manufacturer's troubleshooting tables list causes in a specific order. Here is that order, in our words, for the Amana platforms with the most models:

PlatformDocumented check order
Electric dryer platform, documentation from about 2019
e.g. NED5800HW, YNED5800HW, YNED5900HW
Exhaust vent restriction → Heating element → Moisture sensor
Electric dryer platform, documentation from about 2006
e.g. YNED7300WW
Exhaust vent restriction → Heating element → Moisture sensor

Error codes linked to this problem

If your Amana dryer shows one of these codes, start with its page:

Repair cost

RepairTypical rangeLabor
Dryer moisture sensor bar repair$180–$310Light
Dryer exhaust thermistor replacement$180–$290Light
Dryer vent cleaning and airflow correction$180–$330Light
Dryer drive motor or blower wheel replacement$250–$550Heavy
Dryer thermal fuse and thermostat replacement$180–$310Light
Dryer main control board replacement$280–$640Moderate

Typical total ranges for the Las Vegas area, parts and labor included. The final cost depends on diagnosis, the exact model, parts availability and whether other damage is found.

When to call for diagnosis

Call for service if loads still come out damp with clean sensor bars, a clear vent and a higher dryness setting, or if the dryer goes dark mid-cycle.
