Amana refrigerator frost buildup
Frost on food and shelves comes from humid air getting in: a door that does not seal or close, or frequent long openings. A thick layer of frost on the freezer's back wall or evaporator cover instead points to a defrost system failure, which needs diagnosis because it will eventually stop cooling.
Quick checks first
- Check that the freezer door or drawer closes and seals on its own, with nothing blocking it.
- Inspect the door gaskets for tears or folds and clean them and the cabinet surface they seal against.
- Check that the refrigerator is level front to back as your owner's manual describes, so doors swing closed.
- Keep door openings short and let hot food cool before it goes in.
- Notice where the frost is: on packages and the door, or on the back panel of the freezer.
Door seal and door closing Owner check
Frost on packages, along the door edge or around the gasket means moist room air is getting in. The side-by-side documentation lists a cabinet that is not level, internal obstructions such as an ice bucket or drawer, and gaskets that are not sealing. Freezer drawers on bottom-freezer and French-door models can be held open a fraction of an inch by a misaligned basket or a frozen package.
Humidity and door use Owner check
Every opening lets humid air in, and its moisture freezes on the coldest surfaces. The documentation links interior moisture to humidity and frequent openings. Las Vegas air is dry most of the year, so heavy frost here points more strongly at a sealing problem; during monsoon weeks, though, a little extra frost after busy days is normal and should clear.
Defrost system failure Technician
A solid, even layer of frost on the freezer back panel or evaporator cover means the coil is not being defrosted. The built-in documentation lists frost blocking the evaporator as a cause of warm compartments. The defrost heater, the defrost thermostat or sensor, and the control that times the cycle all need to work. Some models store a defrost heater code. Manual defrosting buys time, but a technician must find which part of the circuit failed.
Ice around the ice maker and chute Technician
Applies to: French-door refrigerator, Side-by-side refrigerator
Frost or ice around an ice chute or a door ice compartment can come from a chute flap that does not close, a worn chute seal, or a compartment gasket that leaks. On French-door models the in-door ice compartment has its own seal against the cabinet. A technician checks the flap, its seal and any heater meant to keep it clear.
Drain freezing and refreezing Technician
When the defrost drain is partly blocked, melt water refreezes at the bottom of the coil and builds up cycle after cycle. The result is ice on the freezer floor and frost that returns quickly after a manual defrost. A technician clears the drain and checks the drain heater or heater position where the model uses one.

When to call for diagnosis
Call for service if frost covers the freezer back panel, if frost returns within days of a manual defrost, or if cooling has started to fade along with the frost.
