Estate freezer running constantly
A freezer that runs all the time is either facing more heat than usual (a hot garage, a fresh load of food, a leaky seal or a blocked condenser) or cannot reach its set temperature because of a fan, defrost, control or sealed-system problem. If the freezer stays near 0°F while running constantly, look at load and location first; if it is also warm, it needs diagnosis.
Quick checks first
- Check the temperature with an appliance thermometer before assuming a fault.
- Make sure the lid or door seals all the way around and is not held open by packages.
- Give the cabinet the clearance your owner's manual specifies and keep the condenser area free of dust and clutter.
- If the freezer is in a garage, notice whether the constant running started with hot weather.
Heat load and new food Owner check
A freezer runs long after a big shopping trip, after the door has been open, and on hot days. Some newer models use variable-speed compressors that are designed to run for long periods at low speed. Long running with correct temperatures is not a fault by itself.
Garage location in summer Owner check
A freezer in a Las Vegas garage may face air well above 100°F for weeks. The compressor has to run almost continuously to keep up and may not succeed. Shade, ventilation and clearance help, but if the freezer is not rated for that environment, moving it indoors may be the real fix.
Seal and condenser airflow Owner check
A gasket that leaks lets warm air in so the compressor never catches up; frost near the leak is a clue. A condenser coated in dust, or cabinet walls pressed against boxes on a chest freezer, keep heat from escaping. Clean what the owner's manual says you may clean and leave the specified clearance.
Condenser and evaporator fans Technician
On models with fans, a stopped condenser fan makes the compressor run hot and long, and a stopped evaporator fan keeps cold air trapped at the coil. A technician checks that both run when the compressor runs, that the blades turn freely, and that nothing such as ice, lint or a dislodged shroud is restricting airflow. Chest freezers without fans skip this step.
Defrost and temperature control Technician
A frost-free freezer with an iced-over coil runs constantly because airflow is blocked. A thermostat or sensor that never signals satisfaction keeps the compressor on even when the cabinet is cold enough, which can drive temperatures far below the setting. A technician checks the defrost circuit and the control's response.
This stage requires professional testing. Full diagnosis involves hazards such as live line voltage, gas, a sealed refrigerant system or microwave high voltage. Do not attempt it yourself.
Sealed system Professional only
A low refrigerant charge or a weak compressor makes the system run without reaching temperature. This requires professional diagnosis: newer sealed systems contain flammable R600a, and older ones R134a that must be recovered under EPA rules. A technician rules out the simpler causes above before suspecting the sealed system.
Repair cost
| Repair | Typical range | Labor |
|---|---|---|
| Freezer door gasket replacement | $180–$440 | Light |
| Freezer condenser fan motor replacement | $180–$370 | Light |
| Freezer evaporator fan motor replacement | $190–$410 | Moderate |
| Freezer defrost system repair | $210–$460 | Moderate |
| Freezer temperature sensor or thermostat replacement | $180–$330 | Light |
| Freezer sealed-system leak repair Sealed system | $650–$1,540 | Major |
| Freezer compressor replacement Sealed system | $750–$1,650 | Major |
Typical total ranges for the Las Vegas area, parts and labor included. The final cost depends on diagnosis, the exact model, parts availability and whether other damage is found.
When to call for diagnosis
Call for service if the freezer runs constantly and is also too warm, or if it runs constantly in a cool room with a good seal and clean condenser.
