JennAir wall oven convection fan not working

A convection fan that does not turn may simply not be called for: many ovens pause the fan when the door opens, run it only in convection modes, and cycle it during preheat. If it never runs in a convection mode with the door closed, the fan motor, its blade, the door switch input or the control output needs diagnosis; a separate cooling fan that runs above the oven is a different part.

Quick checks first

  • Select a convection mode, close the door and wait a few minutes; many fans stop whenever the door is open.
  • Look through the window or listen for the fan at the back of the cavity, not the cooling fan noise near the control area.
  • Check that nothing such as foil or a pan is touching the fan cover at the back wall.
  • Reset the breaker once if the fan stopped after a power interruption.

When the fan is supposed to run Owner check

The convection fan sits behind a cover on the back wall of the cavity. It runs in convection bake, roast or air fry modes, may pulse or reverse direction, and stops when the door opens so heat does not blow out. Some ovens delay the fan during the first part of preheat. A fan that only runs at certain stages of a cycle may be working as designed.

Cooling fan versus convection fan Owner check

The fan you often hear after cooking is the cooling fan above the oven, which protects the electronics and can run long after the oven is off. It does not move air inside the cavity. A working cooling fan says nothing about the convection fan, and a noisy cooling fan is a separate issue.

Blocked or damaged fan Technician

Foil, a pan pushed against the rear cover, or a bent cover can stop the blade. A blade loose on its shaft spins without moving much air. Grinding or a rising hum before the fan stopped points to worn motor bearings. A technician removes the cover and checks the blade and motor.

Convection motor and heater Technician

On true convection or third-element ovens there is also a heating element around the fan. If the fan motor has failed, the oven may still heat in convection mode but bake unevenly; if the element has failed, the fan may run while heating is slow. A technician tests the motor and the convection element separately.

Door switch and control output Technician

Because the fan stops when the door opens, a door switch that reports the door as open will keep the fan off, and the oven light behavior can give a clue. If the switch is fine, the control relay that powers the fan or the wiring is next. A technician checks the switch input and the fan output in diagnostics.

Repair cost

RepairTypical rangeLabor
Wall oven convection fan replacement$260–$550Heavy
Wall oven control board replacement$350–$830Moderate
Wall oven bake or broil element replacement$220–$510Moderate

Typical total ranges for the Las Vegas area, parts and labor included. The final cost depends on diagnosis, the exact model, parts availability and whether other damage is found.

When to call for diagnosis

Call for service if the convection fan never runs in a convection mode with the door closed, or if it grinds or squeals before stopping.
