KitchenAid gas cooktop burner won't light
A gas cooktop burner that will not light is missing spark at the right spot, missing gas, or mixing gas and air poorly. Check that the cap is seated, the burner is dry and its ports are clean, the cooktop has power for the spark system, and the gas supply is on; a cracked electrode, a spark switch or module, or a gas valve problem needs a technician. If you smell gas, leave and call the gas utility.
Quick checks first
- Turn the knob to Lite and note whether this burner clicks, and whether other burners light.
- Seat the burner cap flat and centered on its base, and make sure the base is fully in place.
- Let the burner dry completely after a spill or cleaning.
- Clean the burner ports and the area around the electrode as your owner's manual describes, without enlarging the ports.
- Check that the cooktop is plugged in or its breaker is on; electronic ignition needs power.
- If no burner gets gas, check that the shutoff valve on the gas line to the cooktop is open, if it is the visible owner shutoff.
- If you smell gas, leave the home without using switches or phones inside and call the gas utility.
Cap, base and ports Owner check
On sealed burners the cap must sit exactly on the base so the ports line up with the spark electrode. A cap that is crooked, upside down or from another burner can click without lighting or give a lazy, lifting flame. Burned-on food in the ports near the electrode blocks the gas that should reach the spark. Reseat and clean as the owner's manual shows, and never enlarge the ports.
Moisture after spills or cleaning Owner check
Water and cleaner on the burner base or electrode give the spark an easier path than the gas, so it clicks but does not light. Boil-overs can also run down into the burner opening. Leave the burner off and let it dry fully, which can take hours; afterward it should light normally if moisture was the only problem.
Power and gas supply Owner check
If no burner clicks, the cooktop may have no power: check the plug or breaker. If burners click but none light, the gas supply is the place to look, including a closed shutoff, a utility interruption or an empty propane tank. Propane and natural gas need different orifices, so a converted cooktop must be set up by a technician. If you smell gas, do not light anything or operate switches, leave the home and call the gas utility or 911 from outside.
Electrode, spark switch and module Technician
Each burner has a porcelain spark electrode, each knob has a switch that triggers the spark module, and the module fires all electrodes together. One burner without a spark points to its electrode or lead; no spark at all points to power or the module. A cracked electrode can spark to the burner base instead of across the gas. A technician inspects these parts and their wiring.
This stage requires professional testing. Full diagnosis involves hazards such as live line voltage, gas, a sealed refrigerant system or microwave high voltage. Do not attempt it yourself.
Burner valve and regulator Professional only
If a burner sparks properly but never gets gas, its valve or gas path may be blocked; low flames on every burner may involve the pressure regulator. Gas valves, regulators and gas connections require professional testing because a leak or a wrong adjustment creates fire and carbon monoxide hazards.
Repair cost
| Repair | Typical range | Labor |
|---|---|---|
| Gas cooktop spark ignition repair | $180–$370 | Light |
| Gas cooktop burner valve replacement | $230–$510 | Moderate |
Typical total ranges for the Las Vegas area, parts and labor included. The final cost depends on diagnosis, the exact model, parts availability and whether other damage is found.
When to call for diagnosis
Call for service if a burner still will not light after reseating, drying and cleaning, if flames are yellow or lifting, or immediately if you smell gas.
