KitchenAid dishwasher lights blinking

Blinking lights on a dishwasher are messages. A slowly blinking Start/Resume light means the cycle is paused, a rapidly flashing key light points to a stuck key, and a flashing Clean light means the control stored an error code that tells a technician which system failed. Note the pattern before resetting.

Quick checks first

  • Count the flashes or note the code before doing anything else.
  • If the Start/Resume light blinks slowly, close the door and press Start/Resume.
  • If the Start light flashes three times when pressed, open and close the door, then press Start again.
  • If a Sanitized light blinks, the final rinse did not reach temperature; run the sink hot first and avoid opening the door during the final rinse.
  • Press Cancel once to silence a beeping fault alarm.
  • Unplug the dishwasher or switch off its breaker for one minute to reset, then see if the light returns.

Start/Resume blinking Owner check

The documentation explains that opening the door for more than a few seconds or a power interruption pauses the cycle, and the Start/Resume light blinks until the user presses it. Some models also beep. If pressing it does nothing, the key or the door switch is suspect.

Three flashes when Start is pressed Owner check

Some controls check that the door switch opens between cycles. If the door has not been opened since the last cycle, Start flashes three times and the dishwasher will not run. Opening and closing the door clears it. If it keeps happening after opening the door, the door switch contacts may be stuck closed.

Sanitized light blinking Owner check

The Sanitized indicator blinks or a message appears when the final rinse did not reach or hold the required temperature. The documentation lists opening the door during the final rinse or dry, cold incoming water, low voltage, heating or sensor problems, and suds that briefly open the door switch. Run the tap hot first and leave the door shut.

Clean light flashing: stored codes Technician

On many models, a flashing Clean light means the control's self-diagnostics found a problem. The flashes form a two-part code: the first number names the system, such as water inlet, heating or draining, and the second names the problem. Older models signal a water heating problem with a repeating seven-flash pattern. The code is a starting point, not a part to replace.

Rapid flashing over a key Technician

A key light flashing rapidly and continuously means the control sees a key held down. The cause can be a stuck key, a short in the keypad, or a fault in the control lines that read the keys. Moisture from a failed vent or fan can affect the keypad too. The documentation separates keypad and control faults before replacing either.

All lights on Technician

When every light comes on and the dishwasher will not run, the documentation points to a software or hardware incompatibility in the control, for example after a part replacement. This is diagnosed with the service error table and the service diagnostic cycle, and the documentation treats it as a control issue rather than a failed pump, valve or heater.
