KitchenAid dishwasher not cleaning dishes

When dishes come out dirty, the service documentation starts with the cycle choice, the filters and whether the spray arms turn freely. Water that is not hot enough and loading that blocks the spray come next. If those are fine, the soil sensor, the diverter, the wash pump or a cycle cut short by a fault are checked by a technician.

Quick checks first

  • Clean the filter in the bottom of the tub.
  • Spin the spray arms by hand; clear any clogged holes and make sure tall items do not block them.
  • Run the kitchen tap until the water is hot before starting the dishwasher.
  • Use a heavier cycle or the high-temperature option for baked-on soil.
  • Use fresh detergent in the dispenser and do not let items block the dispenser lid.

Cycle choice and water temperature Owner check

The documentation lists the cycle choice first, suggesting the high-temperature option for better results. Short or eco cycles use less heat and water. Incoming water that is too cool reduces cleaning and makes the dishwasher spend longer heating; running the sink hot first helps. A dishwasher connected to the cold line will always struggle.

Filters Owner check

Plugged or damaged screens are the next documented check. A clogged filter starves the wash pump of water, lowering spray pressure and redepositing soil. Rinse the filter regularly; a torn screen lets debris through to the pump and spray arms and should be replaced.

Spray arms Owner check

The documentation checks that the spray arms rotate, including by stopping a cycle to see whether they have moved. Tall pans, utensils hanging through the rack, or a cutting board can stop an arm. Seeds and glass chips plug the nozzle holes. An arm that cannot spin cleans only one stripe of the rack.

Detergent, rinse aid and hard water Owner check

Old, clumped detergent and a dispenser that does not open both reduce cleaning. Film and spots on glasses point to rinse aid use, hard water or too much detergent, as the documentation's spotting table describes; etching from too much detergent in soft, hot water cannot be washed off. Adjust detergent to your water hardness and keep rinse aid filled.

Soil sensor and diverter Technician

Many models use a turbidity sensor to choose how long to wash, and a diverter to direct water to different spray zones. The documentation says to check the service error table for these even if no code was recorded. A diverter stuck in one position leaves part of the racks unwashed; a sensor fault can shorten the cycle.

This stage requires professional testing. Full diagnosis involves hazards such as live line voltage, gas, a sealed refrigerant system or microwave high voltage. Do not attempt it yourself.

Wash pump and cut-short cycles Professional only

The control cancels a cycle when it detects a wash motor, low water or suds problem, which leaves dishes dirty. On older models the documentation checks for a seized pump motor, loose connections, and a damaged start capacitor. Capacitor and motor circuit checks involve stored and line voltage and require professional testing.

What the service documentation checks on KitchenAid platforms

For this symptom, the manufacturer's troubleshooting tables list causes in a specific order. Here is that order, in our words, for the KitchenAid platforms with the most models:

Error codes linked to this problem

If your KitchenAid dishwasher shows one of these codes, start with its page:

Repair cost

RepairTypical rangeLabor
Dishwasher detergent dispenser replacement$180–$370Moderate
Dishwasher thermistor or turbidity sensor replacement$180–$330Light
Dishwasher diverter motor replacement$180–$390Moderate
Dishwasher circulation pump and wash motor replacement$300–$620Heavy
Dishwasher main control board replacement$260–$590Moderate

Typical total ranges for the Las Vegas area, parts and labor included. The final cost depends on diagnosis, the exact model, parts availability and whether other damage is found.

When to call for diagnosis

Call for service if the filters, spray arms, water temperature and detergent are right but cleaning stays poor, or if the dishwasher stops mid-cycle.
