KitchenAid dishwasher not draining

A dishwasher that leaves a pool of dirty water is blocked somewhere between the filter and the sink drain: a clogged filter, a garbage disposer that is full or still has its knockout plug, a clogged air gap, or a kinked drain hose. A small amount of clean water in the sump after a cycle is normal. If the path is clear, the drain pump, its wiring or the control need diagnosis.

Quick checks first

  • Remember that about an inch of water left in the filter area after a cycle is normal.
  • Clean the removable filter in the bottom of the tub as the owner's manual shows.
  • Run the garbage disposer to clear it before starting the dishwasher.
  • If the disposer is newly installed, ask the installer to confirm the dishwasher knockout plug was removed.
  • If you have an air gap on the sink, lift off its cover and clear any debris.
  • Look under the sink for a kinked or crushed drain hose.

What normal looks like Owner check

The service documentation lists a misunderstanding about water level among the first checks. Every dishwasher keeps a small amount of water in the sump under the filter after draining, roughly an inch, to keep seals wet. Dirty water above the filter, food soil left in the tub, or standing water over the spray arm are real drain problems; a shallow clean puddle in the filter area is not.

Filter and sump Owner check

Food soil, seeds, glass chips and labels collect at the filter. When the filter clogs, water drains slowly and the control may stop with a slow-drain code. Many models have an owner-removable filter that should be rinsed regularly. Some newer designs have an additional filter around the pump, which the documentation reaches only with the power off and parts removed; that one is service work.

Disposer, air gap and drain hose Owner check

The documentation checks the path from the dishwasher to the house plumbing: a plugged disposer, a disposer whose knockout plug was never removed, a stuck check valve in the drain loop, and plugged hoses. An air gap on the sink, where installed, clogs with food and overflows at the sink during drain. A drain hose that is too narrow also slows draining. Most of these can be checked under the sink without opening the dishwasher.

Drain loop and check valve Technician

The drain hose should rise in a high loop under the counter so dirty sink water cannot flow back. A check valve also blocks backflow. When the valve does not seal and the house drain is partly plugged, sink water flows back into the dishwasher, which looks like a drain failure. The documentation tests this by filling the disconnected hose from above, which a technician or plumber should do.

Drain pump and impeller Technician

If the path is clear, the documentation checks the drain pump. A fractured impeller lets the motor run without moving water; an open winding or loose connection leaves it silent. Hum with no drain suggests a jam or broken impeller, while silence suggests no power. These checks require unplugging the dishwasher and removing parts.

Control Technician

The control powers the drain motor through a drive circuit and records drain codes. It is checked last, after the pump and wiring, by running the drain in the service diagnostic cycle and reading the stored error history. Replacing the control first leaves a jammed pump or a broken wire in place and the problem returns.

What the service documentation checks on KitchenAid platforms

For this symptom, the manufacturer's troubleshooting tables list causes in a specific order. Here is that order, in our words, for the KitchenAid platforms with the most models:

PlatformDocumented check order
Dishwasher platform, documentation from about 2012
e.g. KDFE304DBL, KDFE304DBT, KDFE304DSS
Water inlet valve → Water-level pressure sensing
Dishwasher platform, documentation from about 2025
e.g. KDFM404KBS, KDFM404KPS, KDFS424SBL
Water-level pressure sensing → Filters and spray arms
Dishwasher platform, documentation from about 2011
e.g. KUDE40PXSS, KUDE48FXBT, KUDL20IXBL
Water inlet valve → Water-level pressure sensing
Dishwasher platform, documentation from about 2012
e.g. KUDC10FBBL, KUDC10FBSS, KUDC10FBWH
Drive or pump motor → Water inlet valve → Water-level pressure sensing

Error codes linked to this problem

If your KitchenAid dishwasher shows one of these codes, start with its page:

Repair cost

RepairTypical rangeLabor
Dishwasher drain pump replacement$180–$400Moderate
Dishwasher main control board replacement$260–$590Moderate

Typical total ranges for the Las Vegas area, parts and labor included. The final cost depends on diagnosis, the exact model, parts availability and whether other damage is found.

When to call for diagnosis

Call for service if the filter, disposer, air gap and hose are clear but dirty water stays in the tub, or if a drain code returns.

Model-specific information

Causes and codes differ by platform. Look up your model for its exact fault-code list, or start from a popular model:
