KitchenAid ice maker not making ice

A standalone ice maker that is not making ice is either not running (power, switch, room temperature limits), not getting water, or not able to freeze and release the ice slab because of scale, a blocked condenser, a valve, pump or harvest fault, or a sealed-system problem. Check power, the water supply and the room temperature first, then whether the unit needs the cleaning cycle described in your owner's manual.

Quick checks first

  • Check that the unit is plugged in, the breaker or GFCI outlet is not tripped, and the on/off or selector switch is in the ice-making position.
  • Confirm the household water shutoff valve to the ice maker is fully open and the supply line is not kinked.
  • Check the room temperature: these units are designed for a limited range and stop or slow down in a cold room or in very hot air.
  • Keep the front grille clear; the condenser draws air through it and needs it unobstructed.
  • If your owner's manual describes a cleaning cycle or cleaning interval, check whether it is overdue.

Power, switch and room temperature Owner check

The service documentation for this type of ice maker starts with no power at the outlet, an open selector switch and loose connections, and it lists a room colder than about 55°F as a reason the unit shuts itself off through its bin sensor. It also lists rooms hotter than about 100°F for slow or failed harvest. In Las Vegas that makes an outdoor kitchen, a patio bar or an unconditioned garage a realistic cause by itself in summer.

Water supply Owner check

If the reservoir inside the unit stays empty, the documentation lists the water supply turned off first. A kinked line, a clogged external filter, or a closed or partly closed shutoff valve has the same effect. Check these before suspecting a part. If the unit fills but makes no ice, move on to the freezing and harvest sections below.

Scale and the cleaning cycle Owner check

Clear-ice makers freeze water onto a cold plate in thin layers and then release the slab. Mineral scale on that plate holds the slab so it will not release, and the documentation lists scale buildup for a slab that stays stuck. Las Vegas water is very hard, so scale forms faster here than the generic cleaning interval suggests. Run the cleaning procedure in your owner's manual with the cleaner it specifies; deeper cleaning of internal parts is technician work.

Water valve, reservoir and recirculation Technician

Inside the unit, water enters through an inlet valve, collects in a reservoir and is pumped over the cold plate. The documentation lists a defective inlet valve, a frozen inlet tube, a loose reservoir cap, return or inlet tubes out of position, a tube detached from the recirculation pump, a failed pump and a partly blocked water distributor. A valve that seeps keeps adding warm water, so the slab never thickens. A technician checks each of these in turn.

Condenser and condenser fan Technician

A blocked condenser or a stalled condenser fan motor is listed both for a warm cold plate and for thin or irregular slabs. Lint, dust and kitchen grease collect on the condenser behind the front grille; in a hot room the effect is greater. A technician cleans the condenser and confirms that the fan runs.

This stage requires professional testing. Full diagnosis involves hazards such as live line voltage, gas, a sealed refrigerant system or microwave high voltage. Do not attempt it yourself.

Harvest system Professional only

To release the slab, the unit briefly routes hot refrigerant gas through the cold plate using a solenoid-operated valve. The documentation lists a defective or disconnected hot gas solenoid and a defective hot gas valve for a thick slab that will not release. The valve is part of the sealed system and its coil is tested with power applied, so this requires professional testing.

Compressor and sealed system Professional only

If the reservoir is full but the cold plate stays warm, the documentation lists a compressor that is not running, which involves the compressor, its relay and its overload. A U-shaped or partial slab is linked to a partial refrigerant leak or a restriction. Sealed-system diagnosis and repair require a certified technician, both because refrigerants must be handled under EPA rules and because some are flammable. A short startup delay after power-up is normal and should be ruled out first.

Repair cost

RepairTypical rangeLabor
Standalone ice maker water inlet valve replacement$190–$400Light
Standalone ice maker production repair$230–$530Moderate
Standalone ice maker compressor replacement Sealed system$800–$1,650Major
Standalone ice maker refrigerant leak repair Sealed system$700–$1,540Major

Typical total ranges for the Las Vegas area, parts and labor included. The final cost depends on diagnosis, the exact model, parts availability and whether other damage is found.

When to call for diagnosis

Call for service if the unit has power, water and a suitable room temperature and still makes no ice after a cleaning cycle, or if the cold plate stays warm.
