Troubleshooting

KitchenAid microwave turntable not turning

A turntable that does not turn may have a tray or roller ring that is out of place, a cracked coupler, or a turntable that was switched off on models that allow it. If the tray is seated and the turntable setting is on, the turntable motor or the control output that powers it needs diagnosis.

Quick checks first

  • Check that the glass tray sits on the roller ring and that its center hub engages the drive coupler.
  • Clean the roller ring, its track and the cavity floor so the wheels roll freely.
  • Check whether your model has a turntable on/off key and that it is set to on.
  • Make sure the dish is not too large and does not rub the cavity walls.

Tray, roller ring and coupler Owner check

The glass tray rests on a roller ring and is driven by a small coupler that pokes up through the cavity floor. If the tray is off the coupler, the ring is upside down or dirty, or the coupler is cracked, the motor may run while the tray stays still. Remove the tray and ring, clean them and the floor, and reseat them as the owner's manual shows.

Turntable setting and large dishes Owner check

Many over-the-range models let you switch the turntable off for large dishes, and the setting stays off until changed. A dish that touches the walls or the door also stops the tray. Check the setting and try with an empty tray before suspecting a part.

Cooking until it is fixed Owner check

Cooking without a turning tray is safe for the oven, but food heats unevenly, which matters for reheating meat or leftovers to a safe temperature. Stir and rotate food by hand partway through, and let it stand before checking the temperature, until the turntable is repaired. Avoid running the oven empty while testing the tray.

Turntable motor Technician

The motor sits under the cavity floor. If the coupler does not turn with the tray removed, or it hums without turning, the motor may have failed or its shaft may be stripped. Access means opening the cabinet, which is technician work because of the high-voltage parts nearby.

Control output and wiring Technician

The control powers the turntable motor through a relay along with the light and fan. If the motor is good but receives no power, the control output or the wiring is at fault. A technician checks which part is missing power.
