KitchenAid gas range burner keeps clicking
Continuous clicking from a gas range means the spark system thinks a knob is in the Lite position or a spark switch is wet or shorted. Turn every knob fully off, dry the cooktop and burners after any spill or cleaning, and check that caps are seated; if clicking continues with everything dry, the spark switch or module needs service.
Quick checks first
- Turn every surface knob fully to Off and check that none is loose or sitting slightly past Off.
- If the clicking started after cleaning or a boil-over, let the cooktop and burners dry completely, which can take several hours.
- Seat every burner cap and base correctly.
- If the clicking does not stop and you need to quiet it, switch off the range breaker until it dries out.
A knob not fully off Owner check
Each knob turns a small spark switch on its valve stem. If a knob is in the Lite range, or the knob is cracked or slipping on its stem, the switch stays closed and the spark module keeps firing all electrodes. Check every knob, including on the burner you did not use.
Moisture on the cooktop and switches Owner check
Water from cleaning or a spill can run down around the valve stems and into the spark switches, closing them electrically. Water around the electrode also makes the spark wander. The clicking should stop once things are fully dry. Avoid spraying cleaner directly onto the control area; apply it to a cloth instead.
Clicking after the burner lights Owner check
On many ranges the clicking should stop when the knob is turned from Lite to a cooking setting. Some designs re-ignite automatically if the flame goes out and will click if the flame does not reach the electrode, which happens with a misaligned cap, clogged ports or a draft. Clean and reseat the burner and check for drafts from a vent or fan.
Spark switch or harness Technician
If clicking continues with all knobs off and the range dry, a spark switch may be stuck closed or a harness may be shorted by grease or heat damage. A technician isolates which switch is closed and replaces it or the switch harness.
Spark module Technician
A spark module that keeps firing with no switch closed, or that clicks irregularly, may be failing. Because the module produces a high-voltage pulse, a technician tests and replaces it. Oven hot-surface igniters do not click; a clicking sound from the oven on some models comes from a spark-ignited bake burner or from relays on the control.
