KitchenAid refrigerator ice maker not working

An ice maker that has stopped is not getting water, is not cold enough, or has been switched off by its own arm or switch. Check that it is turned on and the bin is seated, that the water supply is open and the filter is not clogged, and that the freezer is near 0°F; if all of that is right, a frozen fill tube, the water inlet valve or the ice maker module needs diagnosis.

Quick checks first

  • Make sure the ice maker is on: the wire shut-off arm is down, or the ice maker switch or menu setting is on.
  • Check that the ice bin is pushed in and seated fully; on many models the ice maker will not run if the bin is out of place.
  • Confirm the household water shutoff valve to the refrigerator is fully open and the supply tubing behind the unit is not kinked.
  • Replace the water filter if it is past its change date, and dispense water to see whether flow is normal.
  • Check that the freezer is cold enough; ice production slows or stops when the freezer runs warm.
  • After a new install or after emptying the bin, allow about a day before deciding ice production has failed.

Ice maker switched off or bin out of place Owner check

The side-by-side documentation lists the shut-off arm in the raised position and an ice bin that is not installed correctly before anything mechanical. The arm or a sensor stops production when it thinks the bin is full, so a jammed cube or a crooked bin can halt the cycle. On models with an electronic switch or menu setting, confirm it is on. Newly installed ice makers and freshly emptied bins also need time to restock.

Water supply, pressure and filter Owner check

No water means no ice. The documentation lists the household supply not reaching the valve, kinked tubing, low water pressure, a clogged filter and the wrong type of shutoff valve. Self-piercing saddle valves are singled out because they restrict flow and clog over time. If the water dispenser is also slow or dead, the problem is upstream of the ice maker. Las Vegas tap water is very hard, and mineral scale builds up in valves, filters and small fittings faster than in soft-water areas.

Freezer temperature Owner check

The ice maker waits until its mold is cold enough before it harvests, so a freezer running warm can stop ice production completely while food still feels frozen. The documentation lists freezer temperature for both no-ice and slow-ice complaints. If the freezer is soft or above roughly 10°F, treat it as a cooling problem first; see the guide for a freezer that is not freezing.

Frozen fill tube Technician

Water reaches the mold through a short tube that passes into the freezer. If the valve drips slowly or water flow is weak, water freezes in the tube and blocks the next fill. The documentation connects ice in the inlet tube to low water pressure, a partly open saddle valve and a warm freezer. Thawing the tube clears the symptom, but a technician also has to find out why it froze, or it will happen again.

Water inlet valve Technician

The inlet valve at the back of the refrigerator opens on command to fill the ice maker and, on dispenser models, to send water to the door. A valve with a failed coil, a clogged inlet screen or hard-water scale may not open, may open only partially, or may seep and freeze the fill tube. A technician checks whether the valve receives a fill command and whether water actually passes when it does.

Ice maker module and sensors Technician

The ice maker assembly contains a motor, a harvest mechanism, a mold heater or twist mechanism, and a temperature sensor or thermostat that decides when the ice is ready. If one of these fails, the mold may stay full of frozen cubes and never harvest, or harvest without refilling. Some electronic models report ice maker sensor codes. A technician runs a harvest test and checks the sensor and control signals.

Door ice compartments Technician

Applies to: French-door refrigerator

Many French-door models make ice in an insulated compartment in the fresh-food door or upper cabinet, cooled by air ducted from the freezer or by a dedicated fan. If that airflow is blocked by frost or the fan stops, the ice maker stays too warm to harvest while the freezer itself works. A technician checks the duct, the ice compartment fan and the compartment sensor.

Error codes linked to this problem

If your KitchenAid refrigerator shows one of these codes, start with its page:

Repair cost

RepairTypical rangeLabor
Refrigerator ice maker replacement$250–$550Moderate
Refrigerator water inlet valve replacement$180–$390Light
Refrigerator temperature sensor replacement$180–$340Light
Refrigerator main control board replacement$300–$750Moderate
Refrigerator evaporator fan motor replacement$200–$430Moderate

Typical total ranges for the Las Vegas area, parts and labor included. The final cost depends on diagnosis, the exact model, parts availability and whether other damage is found.

When to call for diagnosis

Call for service if the water supply, filter and freezer temperature are all fine and the ice maker still does not cycle, if the fill tube keeps freezing, or if the ice maker shows a code.
