KitchenAid refrigerator leaking water
Where the water appears tells you most about the cause. Water behind or under the unit points to the supply line, the inlet valve or the drain pan; water inside under the crisper drawers or ice on the freezer floor points to a blocked defrost drain; drops on the outside or walls are condensation from humidity or a poor door seal.
Quick checks first
- Note where the water is: under the front, behind the unit, inside the fresh-food section, on the freezer floor, or at the dispenser.
- If water is coming from the supply line behind the refrigerator, close the household water shutoff valve to it.
- Check that the water filter is seated and locked; a partly installed cartridge can drip inside the housing.
- Look for a door that does not close fully and for torn or folded door gaskets, which cause sweating and frost.
- Empty the drip tray under the dispenser if your model has one and check that it is not overflowing.
Find the source first Owner check
A puddle in front of a refrigerator can come from at least four different systems: the water supply, the defrost drain, the dispenser or ice maker, and plain condensation. Dry the area and check it again a few hours later. Water that appears only after ice is made or dispensed points to the water system; water after a defrost period, often under the crisper drawers or as a sheet of ice on the freezer floor, points to the drain path.
Supply line and shutoff valve Owner check
The side-by-side documentation calls out plastic supply tubing as less durable than copper and warns against self-piercing and small saddle valves, which leak and clog over time. Check the connection at the house shutoff and at the back of the refrigerator for drips, and look for tubing pinched when the unit was pushed back. In hard-water areas like Las Vegas, mineral crust on fittings can be a clue to a slow, long-standing leak.
Condensation inside and outside Owner check
Drops on the inside walls or on the cabinet exterior are condensation. The documentation ties interior drops to humidity and frequent door openings, and to door gaskets that are not sealing. Gaskets that are dirty, torn or folded let humid air in, which also builds frost. Clean the gasket and the cabinet face it seals against, and check that the doors close on their own.
Defrost drain blockage Technician
Frost-free models melt evaporator frost several times a day and the water runs through a drain to a pan under the cabinet, where it evaporates. If food debris or ice plugs the drain, the water overflows into the compartments, typically showing up under the crisper drawers or as ice on the freezer floor. A drain that keeps refreezing may point to a defrost heater or drain heater problem. A technician clears the drain and checks why it blocked.
Drain pan and machine compartment Technician
The defrost pan sits near the condenser so that heat evaporates the water. A cracked or displaced pan, or a drain tube that has come out of the pan, leaves water on the floor under the refrigerator. When the condenser fan stops, water can also evaporate more slowly. Checking the pan requires moving the unit and opening the machine compartment, which is technician work.
Inlet valve, fill tube and dispenser Technician
A cracked inlet valve body, a loose fitting on the valve, or a seeping valve can leak behind the unit. A valve that does not close fully can overfill the ice mold, which spills into the bin and freezes cubes together. Leaks at the door can come from the dispenser tubing or a damaged connection in the door. A technician pressure-checks the connections and watches a fill cycle.
Error codes linked to this problem
If your KitchenAid refrigerator shows one of these codes, start with its page:
Repair cost
| Repair | Typical range | Labor |
|---|---|---|
| Refrigerator water inlet valve replacement | $180–$390 | Light |
| Refrigerator door gasket replacement | $200–$510 | Light |
| Refrigerator defrost system repair | $230–$500 | Moderate |
| Refrigerator ice maker replacement | $250–$550 | Moderate |
| Refrigerator water and ice dispenser repair | $200–$500 | Moderate |
Typical total ranges for the Las Vegas area, parts and labor included. The final cost depends on diagnosis, the exact model, parts availability and whether other damage is found.
When to call for diagnosis
Call for service if water keeps appearing after the supply connection and filter are checked, if ice forms on the freezer floor, or if you find water under the cabinet. Shut off the water supply if the leak is active.
