KitchenAid refrigerator not running
A refrigerator that seems dead is often a power, setting or timing issue: a tripped breaker or GFCI outlet, a control switched off or in a vacation or showroom mode, or a normal defrost period. If lights and controls work but the compressor never runs, or nothing powers up at all with good power at the outlet, the control, the compressor start components or the inverter need diagnosis.
Quick checks first
- Check that the refrigerator is plugged in, and reset the circuit breaker or the GFCI outlet if one has tripped (garage outlets are often GFCI-protected).
- Check that the controls are not turned off, set to the lowest or off position, or in a vacation, Sabbath or showroom demo mode.
- If the lights and display work but nothing seems to run, wait about an hour: the unit may be in a defrost period.
- Close all doors; some models shut off lights and the display when a door is left open too long.
- Unplug the refrigerator for a minute, plug it back in and listen for the fans and compressor to start.
Power supply Owner check
The side-by-side documentation starts with the plug, a blown fuse or tripped breaker, and a power outage. Garage refrigerators are often on GFCI-protected outlets, which can trip and leave the unit off for days unnoticed. Avoid extension cords. If other appliances on the same circuit also lost power, the problem is in the house wiring, not the refrigerator.
Controls off or in a special mode Owner check
A dial in the off position, a touch control set to off, or a power button held by mistake can stop cooling. Built-in documentation also lists a holiday mode that darkens the display and lights, and doors left open for more than about ten minutes. Showroom or demo modes run lights and display with no cooling. Your owner's manual explains how to exit these modes.
Normal defrost period Owner check
Frost-free refrigerators stop the compressor and fans for a defrost period several times a day. The side-by-side documentation describes lights and controls working with no compressor as normal during defrost and suggests waiting. If nothing restarts after about an hour, the defrost control or the main control may be holding the unit in defrost.
Control board power and display Technician
When nothing lights or responds with good power at the outlet, built-in documentation points to the touch or display board losing its connection and to the main control not supplying power to the user interface. A faulty door switch can also turn off lights. A technician checks power at the main control, the harness to the display and the door switch inputs.
This stage requires professional testing. Full diagnosis involves hazards such as live line voltage, gas, a sealed refrigerant system or microwave high voltage. Do not attempt it yourself.
Compressor will not start Professional only
If the condenser fan runs but the compressor never starts, built-in documentation lists a missing control signal from the main board to the inverter, loose or reversed control wires, the inverter board and the compressor. On conventional compressors, the start relay and overload are involved. A main board that overheats because the condenser airflow is blocked can also trigger a service alert. Confirming this requires professional testing with power applied.

Repair cost
| Repair | Typical range | Labor |
|---|---|---|
| Refrigerator main control board replacement | $300–$750 | Moderate |
| Refrigerator user interface / dispenser control replacement | $260–$620 | Light |
| Refrigerator door switch replacement | $180–$300 | Light |
| Refrigerator defrost system repair | $230–$500 | Moderate |
| Refrigerator compressor start relay and overload replacement | $180–$370 | Light |
| Refrigerator compressor inverter board replacement | $300–$680 | Moderate |
| Refrigerator compressor replacement Sealed system | $900–$1,980 | Major |
| Refrigerator condenser fan motor replacement | $190–$400 | Light |
Typical total ranges for the Las Vegas area, parts and labor included. The final cost depends on diagnosis, the exact model, parts availability and whether other damage is found.
When to call for diagnosis
Call for service if the refrigerator has power and normal settings but stays silent and warm for more than an hour, or if the compressor clicks without starting.
