Maytag laundry center washer not draining

When the washer section of a laundry center won't drain, the service documentation checks the drain hose installation and the hose itself before anything inside: hose height, how it enters the standpipe, and blockages. After that come the pump wiring, the drain pump and the control, which need internal access.

Quick checks first

  • Check the drain hose behind the unit for kinks, especially where the laundry center was pushed back against the wall.
  • Make sure the hose hangs loosely in the standpipe and is not sealed or pushed deep into the pipe.
  • Watch the standpipe while the washer drains; water rising out of it means the house drain is slow.
  • Use HE detergent in the recommended amount; heavy suds slow draining.
  • Unplug the unit for one minute and run Drain & Spin with the washer empty.

Drain hose installation Owner check

The laundry center documentation lists the drain hose installation first. The standpipe must fall within the height range given in the installation instructions, and the hose must not be sealed into the drain pipe. A laundry center is often installed in a tight closet, so the hose can be crushed when the unit is pushed into place. A hose that is too low can siphon; one that is too high makes the pump work against more head.

Blocked hose or house drain Owner check

A plugged drain hose is the next documented check. Lint, a small sock or a hardened detergent clump can block it. If water backs up at the standpipe while the pump runs, the household drain is the restriction instead. Sorting out which side is blocked saves an unnecessary repair.

Level sensing Technician

The control decides that draining is complete by reading the water level through a pressure hose. A hose that is pinched or plugged with residue can make the control think water is still in the tub, so it keeps pumping or stops with a long-drain code even though the tub is empty. If the tub is visibly empty when the code appears, this is the area a technician looks at, along with the level sensor.

Suds and debris in the sump Technician

Too much detergent slows draining and confuses the level reading. Small items that slip under the basket can also reach the pump inlet in the tub sump. Reaching the sump in a laundry center is harder than in a standalone washer because the dryer sits above, so it is service work.

Pump wiring, drain pump and control Technician

The documentation then checks the connections between the control and the drain pump, runs the pump from the manual test mode, and replaces it if it does not work. The control is checked last. A pump that hums but does not move water suggests a jam; a silent pump suggests no power reaching it. These are technician checks.

Repair cost

RepairTypical rangeLabor
Laundry center drain pump replacement$200–$440Moderate
Laundry center control board replacement$300–$720Moderate

Typical total ranges for the Las Vegas area, parts and labor included. The final cost depends on diagnosis, the exact model, parts availability and whether other damage is found.

When to call for diagnosis

Call for service if the hose and house drain are clear but water stays in the washer, or if the pump is silent or only hums during drain.
