Maytag microwave fan or light not working
On an over-the-range microwave, a vent fan or cooktop light that does not work may be a burned-out bulb, a fan setting, or a vent damper or filter problem; a fan that turns on by itself may be protecting the microwave from cooktop heat. If bulbs and settings are fine, the vent fan motor, a thermal sensor, the control relay or the wiring needs diagnosis.
Quick checks first
- Check the fan speed and light buttons on the control; many models have separate settings for the vent fan and the cooktop light.
- Replace a cooktop light or cavity light bulb the way your owner's manual describes, with the power off and the bulb cool.
- Clean or replace the grease filters under the microwave.
- If the fan turned on by itself while the cooktop below is hot, let it run; it may switch off once the area cools.
- Note any code on the display.
Automatic fan operation Owner check
Over-the-range microwaves have a heat sensor near the bottom that turns the vent fan on when the cooktop below gets hot, and you may not be able to turn it off until the area cools. That is a protection feature, not a fault. Built-in microwaves and combination units also run a cooling fan after cooking.
Bulbs and filters Owner check
Cooktop lights under the microwave and the cavity light use replaceable bulbs or LED modules. Many owner's manuals show how to replace the cooktop bulbs; follow it and use the specified bulb. Grease filters that are clogged reduce airflow and make the fan seem weak. Charcoal filters for recirculating installs need periodic replacement.
Vent fan motor and damper Technician
A fan motor that hums without turning, squeals or runs at only one speed may be failing. A damper on the exhaust path that sticks closed restricts airflow on outside-vented installs. Service documentation for some newer over-the-range models includes a vent error, F7E9, and a hood temperature sensor fault, F4E3. A technician checks the motor, the damper and the sensor.
Control relays and wiring Technician
The control switches the vent fan speeds and the lights through relays. If several of these stop together, or a key does not respond, the control or the keypad is more likely than the fan or bulb. Opening the cabinet exposes high-voltage parts, so a technician handles it.
Built-in models Technician
Applies to: Built-in microwave
Built-in microwaves and drawer models do not vent the cooktop, but they rely on a cooling fan to protect their electronics. If that fan stops, the oven may shut down or show an over-temperature code. A technician checks the fan and the airflow path in the cabinet.
Error codes linked to this problem
If your Maytag microwave shows one of these codes, start with its page:
Repair cost
| Repair | Typical range | Labor |
|---|---|---|
| Microwave turntable, vent fan or light motor repair | $180–$350 | Moderate |
| Microwave control board replacement | $230–$520 | Moderate |
| Microwave touchpad replacement | $200–$460 | Light |
Typical total ranges for the Las Vegas area, parts and labor included. The final cost depends on diagnosis, the exact model, parts availability and whether other damage is found.
When to call for diagnosis
Call for service if the vent fan does not run on any speed, runs constantly with a cool cooktop, or if lights fail with new bulbs.
