Maytag microwave sparking or arcing
Stop using a microwave that sparks. Arcing is caused by metal in the cavity (foil, twist ties, metal-trimmed dishes, a rack used in the wrong mode), by a food-soaked or damaged waveguide cover, or by chipped cavity paint that exposes bare metal. You may remove metal objects and look inside; anything beyond that, especially sparking that continues with an empty, clean cavity, needs professional service.
Quick checks first
- Stop the oven immediately, open the door and unplug it or switch off its breaker if sparking continues.
- Remove foil, twist ties, utensils and dishes with metal trim, and use only cookware labeled microwave-safe.
- Remove any metal rack unless your owner's manual says it may be used in the mode you selected.
- With the oven unplugged, look at the cover plate on the cavity wall or ceiling for burns, holes or food buildup.
- Look for chipped or peeling paint inside the cavity, especially on the ceiling and walls.
- Do not run the oven empty to test it.
Metal in the cavity Owner check
Thin or pointed metal concentrates the electric field and arcs: foil edges, twist ties, forks, gold or silver trim on plates, and some takeout containers. Metal racks supplied with convection or combination models are designed for specific modes and positions; used in microwave-only mode or touching the walls, they can arc. Removing the metal is the owner's fix, and the oven should then be watched on its next use.
Food and the waveguide cover Owner check
Microwave energy enters the cavity through an opening covered by a thin plate, often on the right wall or the ceiling. Grease and food splatter on that cover can carbonize and start to arc, burning a hole in it. You can look at the cover and gently clean surface splatter as your owner's manual describes; a burned or punctured cover, or carbon behind it, needs replacement and inspection by a technician.
Damaged cavity paint Owner check
The cavity is painted metal. Where the coating chips or wears through, bare edges can arc, especially on the ceiling where steam condenses. Small chips can be repaired with a microwave-cavity paint, but a technician should confirm that the chip is the only cause first, since arcing elsewhere can look similar.
This stage requires professional testing. Full diagnosis involves hazards such as live line voltage, gas, a sealed refrigerant system or microwave high voltage. Do not attempt it yourself.
Sparking with an empty, clean cavity Professional only
If the oven arcs with no metal inside, a clean cover and intact paint, the source may be the magnetron output antenna, the waveguide or a high-voltage component. Continued use can destroy the magnetron and is a fire risk. The high-voltage section can hold a lethal charge in its capacitor even when the microwave is unplugged, so this requires professional testing.
After a sparking event Professional only
A severe arc can damage the waveguide, the magnetron or the door seal surfaces, and a fire inside the cavity can damage interlock parts and wiring. Even if the oven seems to work afterward, have it inspected before regular use if you saw flames, smelled burning plastic or heard loud popping. Keep the door closed if there is a fire inside, and switch off the power.
Repair cost
| Repair | Typical range | Labor |
|---|---|---|
| Microwave no-heat repair (magnetron or high-voltage circuit) | $230–$520 | Moderate |
| Microwave door interlock switch replacement | $180–$320 | Light |
| Microwave control board replacement | $230–$520 | Moderate |
Typical total ranges for the Las Vegas area, parts and labor included. The final cost depends on diagnosis, the exact model, parts availability and whether other damage is found.
When to call for diagnosis
Call for service if sparking continues after all metal is removed, if the cover plate is burned, or if there was a fire in the cavity. Do not keep using the oven.
