Repair or replace a microwave?
A microwave typically lasts about 8–10 years. Whether a repair is worth it depends on what failed, what it costs compared with a new unit, and the condition of the rest of the appliance.
Countertop microwaves rarely justify a repair. Over-the-range and built-in microwaves include installation, venting and trim, so moderate repairs on them are reasonable within their expected life.
What to weigh
- Countertop vs over-the-range vs built-in
- Age
- Installation cost and trim-kit fit for a replacement
- Interior rust or damaged door (safety concerns)
