Repair or replace a range?
A range typically lasts about 13–17 years. Whether a repair is worth it depends on what failed, what it costs compared with a new unit, and the condition of the rest of the appliance.
Ranges are long-lived. Elements, igniters, sensors and spark parts are low to moderate repairs. A control board or glass top on an older basic range is the main point where replacement can make more sense. Gas ranges tend to outlast electric ones.
What to weigh
- Age compared with the typical lifespan range
- Gas vs electric (gas ranges have a longer expected life)
- Cost of the control board or glass top relative to a new range
- Oven cavity and door condition
- Freestanding vs slide-in (slide-in replacement costs more)
