Repair or replace a refrigerator?
A refrigerator typically lasts about 10–14 years. Whether a repair is worth it depends on what failed, what it costs compared with a new unit, and the condition of the rest of the appliance.
Fans, defrost parts, valves, ice makers and controls are moderate repairs worth doing on most refrigerators. Sealed-system repairs (compressor, leak, restriction) are the expensive decision point. Built-in KitchenAid and JennAir refrigerators are usually worth repairing far longer than freestanding units, because replacement costs several times more and involves cabinetry fit; a sealed-system repair on a built-in can make sense well past the freestanding lifespan.
What to weigh
- Age compared with the typical lifespan range
- Sealed-system vs non-sealed repair
- Freestanding vs built-in (built-in units justify much larger repairs)
- Remaining sealed-system part warranty from the manufacturer
- Cabinet, liner and door condition
- Las Vegas heat: units in hot garages or tight cabinets work harder, which affects remaining life
