Troubleshooting

Roper dryer overheating or too hot

A dryer that runs too hot is first a vent problem: lint in the screen, duct or vent hood traps heat, and the safety devices start tripping. Stop using the dryer if it smells of burning or the outside is too hot to touch. If the vent is clear, a heater, relay, thermostat or temperature sensor fault needs professional testing.

Quick checks first

  • Stop the dryer and unplug it if you smell burning or see smoke.
  • Clean the lint screen and check that the outside vent hood flap opens freely with strong airflow.
  • Check the duct behind the dryer for kinks or crushing, and that it is not plastic or foil accordion duct if your installation instructions call for rigid or semi-rigid metal.
  • Let cycles finish their cool-down before removing the load; clothes pulled out early feel very hot.
  • Do not dry items with foam rubber or oily residue, as the use and care guide warns.

Vent restriction Owner check

Applies to: Electric dryer, Gas dryer

Hot exhaust has to leave the house quickly. Lint packed in a long duct, a crushed transition hose, a bird nest or a stuck vent hood flap raises temperatures in the drum and heater area. Lint and vent restriction is a fire-safety matter, not only a drying-time problem. An owner can check the lint screen and the outside flap. Cleaning the full duct run is a service, and a run that is too long or has too many bends may need rerouting.

Cool-down and load care Owner check

The heat-pump documentation notes that loads feel too hot when they are removed before the cool-down portion of the cycle ends. All dryers finish with a period of tumbling without heat. Some fabrics, such as rubber-backed mats, should not be dried on high heat at all. These are not faults.

Lint inside the cabinet Technician

Over time lint escapes the screen and builds up around the blower housing, the heater box or burner, and the base of the cabinet, especially when the vent has been restricted. That lint sits next to the hottest parts of the dryer. Removing it requires taking panels off and is part of a professional cleaning and inspection, often done together with the full duct run.

This stage requires professional testing. Full diagnosis involves hazards such as live line voltage, gas, a sealed refrigerant system or microwave high voltage. Do not attempt it yourself.

Heat in an air-only cycle Professional only

If the dryer heats when an air-only cycle is selected, the heat source is not switching off. The service documentation lists a shorted heater coil, a stuck heater relay on the control, and other heat system faults. On heat-pump models it adds the temperature sensor. A heating element that touches its housing can keep heating regardless of the control. Stop using the dryer until it is checked.

Safety devices and sensors Professional only

Applies to: Electric dryer, Gas dryer

A cycling thermostat or exhaust thermistor tells the control how hot the air is; if it reads low, the dryer keeps heating. High-limit thermostats and thermal cutoffs are backups. When one has opened, the documentation replaces the cutoff and high limit together and checks the exhaust, because a tripped device means real overheating happened. Testing involves live circuits and requires professional testing.

Error codes linked to this problem

If your Roper dryer shows one of these codes, start with its page:

Repair cost

RepairTypical rangeLabor
Dryer vent cleaning and airflow correction$180–$330Light
Dryer heating element replacement$180–$400Moderate
Dryer thermal fuse and thermostat replacement$180–$310Light
Dryer exhaust thermistor replacement$180–$290Light
Dryer main control board replacement$280–$640Moderate

Typical total ranges for the Las Vegas area, parts and labor included. The final cost depends on diagnosis, the exact model, parts availability and whether other damage is found.

When to call for diagnosis

Stop using the dryer and call for service if it heats with no heat selected, smells of burning, or trips its safety devices after the vent has been cleaned.
