Whirlpool gas cooktop igniter keeps clicking
Continuous clicking from a gas cooktop means the spark module is being told a burner is in the Lite position: a knob not fully off, or a spark switch closed by moisture, grease or a fault. Turn all knobs fully off and let the cooktop dry after spills or cleaning; if clicking continues with everything dry, the spark switch, harness or module needs service.
Quick checks first
- Turn every knob fully to Off and check for a loose or cracked knob.
- Let the cooktop dry completely after a spill or cleaning, which can take several hours.
- Seat all burner caps and bases correctly.
- If clicking will not stop, switch off the cooktop's breaker or unplug it until it has dried.
Knob position Owner check
Each knob closes a spark switch while it is in the Lite range. A knob turned slightly past Off, a cracked knob slipping on its stem, or a knob put back on the wrong stem after cleaning can hold a switch closed and keep every electrode sparking. Check each knob, not only the burner you used.
Moisture and cleaning Owner check
Liquid that runs down the valve stems wets the spark switches and closes them electrically. Spraying cleaner on the knob area can do this. Remove the knobs only if your owner's manual says they pull off for cleaning, and let the area dry. Apply cleaner to a cloth rather than spraying the cooktop.
Clicking with the flame lit Owner check
On many cooktops the clicking should stop once the knob leaves Lite. Some models re-ignite automatically and will keep clicking if the flame does not touch the electrode, because of a misaligned cap, clogged ports or a draft from a fan or open window. Clean and reseat the burner and check for drafts.
Spark switch and harness Technician
If clicking continues with knobs off and the cooktop dry, a spark switch may be stuck closed or grease and heat may have damaged the switch harness. A technician isolates the switch that is closed and replaces the switch or harness.
Spark module Technician
A module that fires with no switch closed, or that sparks irregularly, can be failing. Because the module produces high-voltage pulses, testing and replacement are technician work. Before blaming the module, a technician rules out a closed switch, since a single wet or shorted switch makes a healthy module click constantly.
