Whirlpool dishwasher 6-1: inlet water: low or no water

What the dishwasher is detecting

The control opens the fill valve and checks that water arrives, using fill time, the wash pump or a flow meter depending on the platform. When too little water is detected, it stores this code. An electrical fault in the fill valve usually also leaves its own code.

Causes listed for this condition

In the order the service documentation checks them. Documented causes come from the manufacturer's service documentation for these platforms; possible causes are based on how the system works; unconfirmed marks common assumptions that the documentation does not support.

  1. Documented No water reaching the dishwasher: the supply valve closed or the supply line kinked.
  2. Documented Bowls or pots turned up so they catch and carry away wash water.
  3. Documented A detached drain loop or poor drain connection that lets water siphon out while filling.
  4. Documented Water leaking out of the dishwasher.
  5. Documented Debris blocking the fill valve's inlet screen or the water line.
  6. Documented A float (overfill) switch stuck in its raised position, or a dishwasher that is not level; the documentation sends the technician to the float-switch code.
  7. Documented An electrical fault in the fill valve; the documentation sends the technician to the fill-valve code.
  8. Possible General service knowledge, not from the service documentation: Las Vegas valley water is very hard, and scale or sediment can slowly restrict the small inlet screen at the water valve.

Safe checks you can make

  • Make sure the shutoff valve that feeds the dishwasher, usually under the kitchen sink, is turned fully open, and that the kitchen faucet has normal hot-water pressure.
  • Check the load: no bowls, pans or containers turned so they catch and hold water, and nothing hanging below the lower rack where it can stop a spray arm.
  • Look along the floor in front of the dishwasher and in the cabinet under the sink for water, and mention anything you find to the technician.
  • If water was shut off recently for plumbing work, run the kitchen faucet first to clear air and sediment from the line before starting the dishwasher.

Further diagnosis requires opening the appliance. Beyond the owner checks, diagnosis involves removing panels, testing components and checking wiring. We describe what a technician investigates, not how to do it yourself.

What a technician checks

  • Confirms water supply and line size.
  • Checks whether water siphons out of the dishwasher after a fill.
  • Inspects and cleans the inlet screen at the fill valve with the water off.
  • Checks the code history for related fill-valve and float-switch codes.

Typical repairs and cost

Depending on what diagnosis finds, this code can lead to one of these repairs:

RepairTypical rangeLabor
Dishwasher water inlet valve replacement$180–$360Light

Typical total ranges for the Las Vegas area, parts and labor included. The final cost depends on diagnosis, the exact model, parts availability and whether other damage is found.

Can you keep using it?

Use with caution. Without enough water the dishwasher cannot clean and may run long. If the supply valve and load checks do not fix it, schedule service.

Repair or replace?

A fault code alone rarely justifies replacing a dishwasher. Most 6-1 repairs involve a single component once diagnosed. Replacement becomes worth considering when the unit is near the end of its typical 9–12-year life and the diagnosed repair is a major one. See the repair-or-replace guide.
