Whirlpool dishwasher 6-7: inlet water: flow meter
6-7 means the control lost the signal from the flow meter that measures incoming water, so it cannot measure the fill.

What the dishwasher is detecting
A small meter in the water inlet path sends pulses as water passes. If the control stops getting valid pulses, it records this code; on newer platforms it falls back to timed fills, which can make fill levels less accurate.
Causes listed for this condition
In the order the service documentation checks them. Documented causes come from the manufacturer's service documentation for these platforms; possible causes are based on how the system works; unconfirmed marks common assumptions that the documentation does not support.
- Documented A disconnected or damaged flow meter.
- Documented A connection problem at the flow meter, or at a water-softener salt sensor on models that have one.
- Possible Debris or scale stopping the meter's wheel from turning.
Safe checks you can make
- Make sure the shutoff valve that feeds the dishwasher, usually under the kitchen sink, is turned fully open, and that the kitchen faucet has normal hot-water pressure.
- Switch off the dishwasher's circuit breaker (or unplug it, if it plugs in under the sink) for one minute, restore power and run a short cycle to see whether the code returns.
Further diagnosis requires opening the appliance. Beyond the owner checks, diagnosis involves removing panels, testing components and checking wiring. We describe what a technician investigates, not how to do it yourself.
What a technician checks
- Checks the connections at the flow meter (and at the salt sensor on softener models).
- Checks the meter's signal with power off and inspects the inlet path for obstruction.
Typical repairs and cost
Depending on what diagnosis finds, this code can lead to one of these repairs:
| Repair | Typical range | Labor |
|---|---|---|
| Dishwasher water inlet valve replacement | $180–$360 | Light |
Typical total ranges for the Las Vegas area, parts and labor included. The final cost depends on diagnosis, the exact model, parts availability and whether other damage is found.
Can you keep using it?
Use with caution. Most models keep running on timed fills, but fill levels may be off. Watch for poor cleaning or water on the floor and schedule service.

Repair or replace?
A fault code alone rarely justifies replacing a dishwasher. Most 6-7 repairs involve a single component once diagnosed. Replacement becomes worth considering when the unit is near the end of its typical 9–12-year life and the diagnosed repair is a major one. See the repair-or-replace guide.
