Troubleshooting

Whirlpool dishwasher not drying dishes

Poor drying is checked first as a settings and supplies issue: no rinse aid, the heated dry option off, or plastics that do not hold heat. The service documentation lists those first. If they are right, the rinse aid dispenser, the vent, the drying fan or the heater need diagnosis.

Quick checks first

  • Fill the rinse aid dispenser and keep it topped up.
  • Turn on the heated dry option or a high-temperature setting.
  • Expect plastic items to stay wetter than glass and ceramic; they do not hold heat.
  • Unload the bottom rack first so water from cupped items on top does not drip down.
  • Avoid opening the door right after the cycle if your model vents steam through the door.

Rinse aid and heated dry Owner check

The documentation's first two items are rinse aid and the heated dry option. Rinse aid helps water sheet off dishes instead of beading; without it, droplets remain even when the tub is hot. Energy-saving settings may turn off the heater during dry. Many newer dishwashers rely on residual heat and condensation, so some moisture on plastics is expected.

Loading Owner check

Cups and bowls with deep bottoms collect water that pours onto items below. Crowded racks block airflow. Angling items so they drain and leaving space between them improves drying without any repair. Placing plastics on the top rack, away from the heater, protects them and lets them drain, though they still dry less than glass.

Rinse aid dispenser Technician

If the dispenser is full but the level never goes down, it may not be releasing rinse aid. The documentation points to the service error table for a dispenser problem. A dispenser that does not open is checked by a technician.

Vent and drying fan Technician

Some models open a vent or run a fan during drying to move moist air out. A vent stuck closed, or a fan that does not run, leaves heavy condensation in the tub. The documentation lists both, on models that have them, and a stuck control relay as one cause of a vent that will not move.

This stage requires professional testing. Full diagnosis involves hazards such as live line voltage, gas, a sealed refrigerant system or microwave high voltage. Do not attempt it yourself.

Heater and low supply voltage Professional only

The heating element warms water during the wash and air during heated dry. The documentation notes that a heating problem normally also produces a water heating code, and that low supply voltage slows heating. A diverter fault can also keep water from heating. Heater and supply checks involve line voltage and require professional testing.
