Whirlpool dryer drum not turning
If the dryer runs but the drum doesn't turn, the drive belt is the first suspect; if nothing runs at all, the service documentation looks at the thermal fuse on electric models, the door switch, the motor and the control. A motor that hums without turning should be switched off right away.
Quick checks first
- Listen when you press Start: a motor running with no drum movement points to the belt; silence points to the circuit.
- If the motor hums but nothing turns, stop the dryer and unplug it; do not keep trying.
- Check that the door is latched fully and the load is not jammed against the door.
- Remove items caught between the drum and the front or rear edge.
Belt or circuit: what you hear Owner check
A dryer whose motor runs while the drum stays still, often with the drum turning freely by hand, has lost the connection between motor and drum. A dryer that is silent when you press Start has an open circuit somewhere in the motor path. A low hum without movement suggests the motor is getting power but cannot start. Listening carefully narrows the cause before anything is opened.
Drive belt Technician
The belt wraps around the drum and the motor pulley, with an idler pulley keeping it tight. It is the first item in the documentation. A worn belt slips and squeals; a broken one lets the drum spin freely by hand. On gas dryers with a belt switch, a broken belt also prevents the motor from starting at all. Replacing the belt involves taking the cabinet apart.
Thermal fuse (electric) Technician
Applies to: Electric dryer
On electric dryers the thermal fuse is wired in series with the motor, so when it opens the dryer may light up but the drum does not move. The documentation lists it second on electric models. A fuse opens because the exhaust got too hot, so the vent should be checked when it is replaced.
Door switch Technician
A door switch that does not close stops the motor even though the display shows the cycle. It is the next documented check. A broken switch actuator, a sagging door or a worn door catch can cause it. On many models the drum light is wired with the switch, so a light that stays off with the door open is a useful clue.
Drum rollers, glides and idler Technician
Seized drum rollers, worn front glides or a frozen idler pulley add enough drag that the motor stalls or the belt slips. These parts can announce wear with thumping, squealing or scraping before the drum stops. Checking them requires taking the drum out.
This stage requires professional testing. Full diagnosis involves hazards such as live line voltage, gas, a sealed refrigerant system or microwave high voltage. Do not attempt it yourself.
Motor and control Professional only
A motor that hums without starting, or overheats and stops, has a winding, start switch or bearing problem. The motor runs on line voltage and testing it requires professional testing. The control, which switches the motor relay, is checked last.
What the service documentation checks on Whirlpool platforms
For this symptom, the manufacturer's troubleshooting tables list causes in a specific order. Here is that order, in our words, for the Whirlpool platforms with the most models:
| Platform | Documented check order |
|---|---|
| Electric dryer platform, documentation from about 2019 e.g. WED5605MC, WED5605MW, WED560LHW | Drive belt → Power supply to the appliance → Lid or door switch / lock → Drive or pump motor → Main control board |
| Electric dryer platform, documentation from about 2006 e.g. WED9051YW, WED9101YW, WED9151YW | Drive belt → Power supply to the appliance → Lid or door switch / lock → Drive or pump motor → Main control board |
| Electric dryer platform, documentation from about 2020 e.g. WED5100HC, WED5100HW, WED6120HC | Drive belt → Power supply to the appliance → Lid or door switch / lock → Drive or pump motor → Main control board |
| Electric dryer platform, documentation from about 2021 e.g. WED500CMW, WED500RLW, WED500RMW | Drive belt → Power supply to the appliance → Lid or door switch / lock → Drive or pump motor → Main control board |
Error codes linked to this problem
If your Whirlpool dryer shows one of these codes, start with its page:
Repair cost
| Repair | Typical range | Labor |
|---|---|---|
| Dryer drum belt replacement | $180–$320 | Light |
| Dryer drum rollers, glides and idler pulley replacement | $190–$420 | Moderate |
| Dryer thermal fuse and thermostat replacement | $180–$310 | Light |
| Dryer door switch replacement | $180–$290 | Light |
| Dryer drive motor or blower wheel replacement | $250–$550 | Heavy |
| Dryer main control board replacement | $280–$640 | Moderate |
Typical total ranges for the Las Vegas area, parts and labor included. The final cost depends on diagnosis, the exact model, parts availability and whether other damage is found.
When to call for diagnosis
Call for service if the drum does not turn after checking the door and load. Unplug the dryer if the motor hums without turning.
