Whirlpool dryer F9E2: drain assembly failure

F9E2 on heat pump dryers means the condensate float stayed in the full position for more than about a minute while the pump was running, so collected water is not being removed.

What the dryer is detecting

Heat pump dryers condense moisture from the drying air into water. A pump removes it and a float switch reports the level. If the float still reads full after the pump has run for a while, the control stores F9E2.

Causes listed for this condition

In the order the service documentation checks them. Documented causes come from the manufacturer's service documentation for these platforms; possible causes are based on how the system works; unconfirmed marks common assumptions that the documentation does not support.

  1. Documented A condensate pump that is not moving water.
  2. Documented A float switch stuck in the full position.
  3. Possible A blocked or kinked drain hose, or a drain outlet placed too high.
  4. Possible Lint buildup in the condensate path from a poorly seated lint filter.

Safe checks you can make

  • Check that the drain hose is not kinked, crushed or raised higher than the installation instructions allow.
  • If your model has a removable water container, empty it and reseat it fully.
  • Make sure the lint filter is clean and fully seated in its running position.

Further diagnosis requires opening the appliance. Beyond the owner checks, diagnosis involves removing panels, testing components and checking wiring. We describe what a technician investigates, not how to do it yourself.

What a technician checks

  • Runs the drain system test in service diagnostics.
  • Checks the pump, float switch and drain path for blockage.

Can you keep using it?

Use with caution. The dryer will keep stopping until water can drain. If the hose checks do not clear it, stop and have the drain system diagnosed to avoid water leaking onto the floor.

Repair or replace?

A fault code alone rarely justifies replacing a dryer. Most F9E2 repairs involve a single component once diagnosed. Replacement becomes worth considering when the unit is near the end of its typical 12–14-year life and the diagnosed repair is a major one. See the repair-or-replace guide.
