Whirlpool dryer takes too long to dry
A dryer that takes too long is starved of airflow, not getting full heat, or being handed wet or oversized loads. Start with the lint screen and the vent: a restricted exhaust is the first item the service documentation lists and is also a fire hazard. If airflow is good, partial heat, the moisture sensor or the controls need diagnosis.
Quick checks first
- Clean the lint screen before every load; wash it with warm soapy water if softener film makes water bead on it.
- Go outside while the dryer runs and check that the vent hood flap opens and strong, warm air comes out.
- Check that the duct behind the dryer is not crushed or kinked when the dryer is pushed back.
- Make sure loads come out of the washer well spun; dripping clothes mean a washer problem.
- Do not overload. Clothes need room to tumble.
- Heat-pump dryers: clean the lower filter as often as the owner's manual says.
Lint screen and vent restriction Owner check
Applies to: Electric dryer, Gas dryer
Every documented check for long drying begins with airflow. The dryer moves heated air through the load and out the vent; when lint fills the screen, duct or vent hood, moist air stays in the drum and the cycle runs on. Many newer models detect this and show a check-vent or airflow code. Lint and vent restriction is a fire-safety matter, not only a drying-time problem. An owner can clean the screen and check the outside flap. Cleaning the full duct run, especially long or concealed runs, is a service job.
Load size and washer spin Owner check
Large, dense loads such as towels and jeans together, or one balled-up sheet set, dry slowly because air cannot pass through them. Clothes coming from a washer that did not spin properly can double the drying time; if laundry feels soaked rather than damp, look at the washer first. Mixed heavy and light fabrics also dry unevenly, so automatic cycles keep running for the thick items.
Heat-pump dryer specifics Owner check
Applies to: Heat-pump dryer
Heat-pump dryers recirculate air and dry at lower temperatures, so cycles are naturally longer than with a vented dryer. The documentation for these models adds checks that vented dryers do not need: both the door lint screen and the lower filter must be clean, the room must not be too cold, and a closet installation needs ventilation openings and airspace. Fabric softener sheets stuck on the air grille also slow drying.
Cycle settings and sensing Technician
Automatic cycles stop when the moisture sensor says the load is dry. Wrong settings, such as a low heat setting on a heavy load or an air-only cycle, stretch the time. If the dryer runs much longer than usual on auto cycles, the documentation looks at the moisture sensor and the exhaust thermistor, which tell the control how dry and how hot the air is.
Controls and the Start key Technician
If the dryer keeps running well past the selected time, the documentation also checks the Start key and keypad, then the main control. A stuck key or a control that misreads its sensors can keep the motor running. These are checked after airflow and sensors.
This stage requires professional testing. Full diagnosis involves hazards such as live line voltage, gas, a sealed refrigerant system or microwave high voltage. Do not attempt it yourself.
Partial heat Professional only
Applies to: Electric dryer, Gas dryer
A dryer can heat a little but not enough. Electric dryers with two heater sections, or with only one leg of the 240-volt supply present, produce weak heat. On gas dryers an igniter or valve problem can let the burner light and then shut off repeatedly. Cycling thermostats that open too early also limit heat. Testing these involves live voltage or the gas system and requires professional testing.
What the service documentation checks on Whirlpool platforms
For this symptom, the manufacturer's troubleshooting tables list causes in a specific order. Here is that order, in our words, for the Whirlpool platforms with the most models:
| Platform | Documented check order |
|---|---|
| Electric dryer platform, documentation from about 2019 e.g. WED5605MC, WED5605MW, WED560LHW | Moisture sensor → Temperature sensor → User interface / keypad → Main control board |
| Electric dryer platform, documentation from about 2006 e.g. WED9051YW, WED9101YW, WED9151YW | Moisture sensor → Temperature sensor → User interface / keypad → Main control board |
| Electric dryer platform, documentation from about 2020 e.g. WED5100HC, WED5100HW, WED6120HC | Moisture sensor → Temperature sensor → User interface / keypad → Main control board |
| Electric dryer platform, documentation from about 2021 e.g. WED500CMW, WED500RLW, WED500RMW | Moisture sensor → Temperature sensor → User interface / keypad → Main control board |
Error codes linked to this problem
If your Whirlpool dryer shows one of these codes, start with its page:
Repair cost
| Repair | Typical range | Labor |
|---|---|---|
| Dryer vent cleaning and airflow correction | $180–$330 | Light |
| Dryer moisture sensor bar repair | $180–$310 | Light |
| Dryer exhaust thermistor replacement | $180–$290 | Light |
| Dryer heating element replacement | $180–$400 | Moderate |
| Gas dryer valve coil or gas valve replacement | $180–$420 | Moderate |
| Gas dryer igniter and flame sensor replacement | $180–$370 | Light |
| Dryer thermal fuse and thermostat replacement | $180–$310 | Light |
| Dryer user interface / keypad replacement | $230–$510 | Light |
Typical total ranges for the Las Vegas area, parts and labor included. The final cost depends on diagnosis, the exact model, parts availability and whether other damage is found.
When to call for diagnosis
Have the vent run cleaned or the dryer diagnosed if airflow at the outside hood is weak after cleaning the screen, if a check-vent code appears, or if normal loads take more than one cycle.
