Troubleshooting

Whirlpool freezer making noise

Hums, clicks, gurgles and the occasional crack of expanding plastic are normal freezer sounds. Rattling or buzzing often comes from the cabinet touching something or not sitting level; grinding or squealing points to a fan, and loud knocking or repeated clicking without running points to the compressor or its start components.

Quick checks first

  • Check that the freezer is level and not touching a wall, shelf or another appliance.
  • Remove items stored on top of a chest freezer and check that baskets are seated.
  • Note whether the noise changes when the door is opened (inside fan) or comes from the bottom back (condenser area).

Normal sounds Owner check

Refrigerant flowing makes gurgling and hissing sounds, the compressor hums, and plastic liners pop as temperatures change. Frost-free uprights also make a sizzle during defrost as water drips on the heater. None of these need service unless the freezer is also warm.

Leveling and contact Owner check

A cabinet that rocks or touches a wall, a garage shelf or another appliance amplifies normal vibration. Adjust the feet as the owner's manual shows and leave the specified clearance. Garage floors often slope toward the door, so check level after any move.

Fans Technician

On models with fans, a blade hitting ice inside the cabinet or debris in the condenser area makes a ticking, grinding or chirping sound. Worn fan motor bearings squeal. Ice on the inside fan often points to a seal or defrost problem. A technician inspects and clears the fan and checks why ice formed.

Drain pan and loose parts Technician

On frost-free uprights, a drain pan under the cabinet can shift and rattle against the condenser or frame, and loose mounting screws or a shifted tubing clamp can buzz. A technician checks the machine compartment, re-seats the pan and secures loose parts. Manual-defrost chest freezers typically use a drain plug for melt water instead of a pan.

This stage requires professional testing. Full diagnosis involves hazards such as live line voltage, gas, a sealed refrigerant system or microwave high voltage. Do not attempt it yourself.

Compressor and start components Professional only

Loud knocking inside the compressor, or a click every few minutes with no running, points to the compressor or its start relay and overload. These need live electrical testing, so this requires professional testing. A compressor that hums loudly but does not start may also trip the breaker after several attempts.
