Whirlpool microwave not heating
A microwave that runs, lights and turns the tray but does not heat has a problem in the high-voltage system that makes microwave energy (the magnetron, high-voltage capacitor, diode and transformer or inverter), in the relay or control that switches it on, or in a thermal cutout or door interlock circuit. Rule out demo mode and a low power level first; everything past that is professional work because of the high voltage involved.
Quick checks first
- Heat a cup of water on full power for one minute; if it is not clearly warmer, the oven is not heating.
- Check that the power level was not set low by mistake and that the oven is not in a demo or showroom mode described in your owner's manual.
- Close the door firmly and check that nothing is caught in the door or latch area.
- Reset the circuit breaker if the display or fan behaves oddly after a power interruption.
- Stop using it if you hear loud buzzing, see sparks or smell burning, and unplug it or switch off its breaker.
Settings, demo mode and a simple test Owner check
A low power level, a defrost program or a sensor cooking mode can make heating look weak. Many models also have a demo mode that runs the light, fan and turntable without generating microwaves. Heating a cup of water at full power for a minute gives a clear answer: noticeably warm water means the system works and the issue is the program or the food.
Door and latch Owner check
The oven only produces microwaves when it is certain the door is closed. A door that is warped, a latch hook that is worn, or food built up on the door seal can leave the oven running its fan and light without heating, or stopping randomly. Look at the latch and seal area for damage or debris and clean the door surfaces as the owner's manual describes. Do not try to adjust or bend the latch.
Control relay and control board Technician
The control turns the high-voltage circuit on through a relay. Service documentation for over-the-range and built-in models lists relay faults, such as F1E4, and on inverter models a microwave generation error, F1E6. These codes report what the control detected, not which part failed. A technician confirms the relay output and the control before looking at the high-voltage parts.
Thermal protection Technician
Thermal cutouts open when the magnetron or cavity overheats, for example when the cooling airflow is blocked or a fan has failed. Over-the-range models cool the electronics with a fan that may share the vent path. A tripped or failed cutout stops heating while the rest of the oven appears normal. A technician finds why it opened before replacing it.
This stage requires professional testing. Full diagnosis involves hazards such as live line voltage, gas, a sealed refrigerant system or microwave high voltage. Do not attempt it yourself.
Door interlock switches Professional only
Several interlock switches work together so the oven cannot produce microwaves with the door open, and one of them is designed to blow a fuse if the others fail. Testing and replacing interlocks must be done by a professional, because an incorrect repair can allow operation with the door open. Never bypass or tamper with an interlock.
High-voltage system Professional only
The magnetron, the high-voltage capacitor, the diode and the transformer, or an inverter board on inverter models, generate the microwave energy. A failure anywhere in this chain leaves the oven running without heating. The high-voltage section can hold a lethal charge in its capacitor even when the microwave is unplugged, so this requires professional testing. The cost of these parts compared with a new microwave is part of the decision.
Error codes linked to this problem
If your Whirlpool microwave shows one of these codes, start with its page:
Repair cost
| Repair | Typical range | Labor |
|---|---|---|
| Microwave touchpad replacement | $200–$460 | Light |
| Microwave door interlock switch replacement | $180–$320 | Light |
| Microwave control board replacement | $230–$520 | Moderate |
| Microwave turntable, vent fan or light motor repair | $180–$350 | Moderate |
| Microwave no-heat repair (magnetron or high-voltage circuit) | $230–$520 | Moderate |
Typical total ranges for the Las Vegas area, parts and labor included. The final cost depends on diagnosis, the exact model, parts availability and whether other damage is found.
When to call for diagnosis
Call for service if a cup of water does not warm at full power, or right away if you see arcing, smell burning or hear loud buzzing. Do not open the cabinet.
