Whirlpool electric range burner not heating
An electric surface element that does not heat is either not connected properly (coil elements), not being powered (a tripped breaker leg, a failed control switch or relay), or has failed itself. On glass cooktops, settings like control lock, the wrong element selected, or cookware that does not suit an induction zone also look like a dead element.
Quick checks first
- Reset the range breaker: switch it fully off, wait a minute, and switch it back on.
- On a coil-element range, with the controls off and the element cool, check that the element is pushed fully into its receptacle and sits level, as your owner's manual describes.
- On a coil-element range, if your manual allows, swap the element with a working one of the same size to see whether the problem follows the element.
- On a glass cooktop, check that control lock is off and the correct zone is selected.
- On an induction cooktop, test with a pan that a magnet sticks to firmly and that covers the zone marking.
Breaker and settings Owner check
If two or more elements stopped at the same time, look at the power first: a 240-volt range circuit can lose one leg so that some elements work and others do not. On electronic glass-top controls, control lock, a timer that ended, or a dual or bridge zone left on the wrong setting can make it seem that an element failed.
Coil elements and receptacles Owner check
Coil elements plug into a receptacle under the cooktop. If the element is not pushed in fully, it may heat partially or not at all, and arcing at a loose connection burns the terminals. Swapping an element with one of the same size quickly shows whether the element or the circuit is the problem. Blackened, pitted terminals mean the receptacle also needs replacement, which is technician work.
Induction cookware Owner check
Induction zones only heat cookware that is magnetic and large enough. Aluminum, copper, glass or a thin pan that warps off the surface will not be detected; the zone may flash or show a pan symbol. Some induction controls show a code when cookware is incompatible or poorly placed.
Radiant element and limiter Technician
Glass cooktop radiant elements sit under the glass and include a limiter that cycles the element to protect the glass. A broken coil, a failed limiter or a scorched connection will leave the zone cold. Because access means lifting the glass top and testing with power applied, a technician handles this.
Infinite switch or control relay Technician
Knob-controlled elements are fed through an infinite switch that cycles power. A switch that fails can leave the element cold or stuck on high. On touch controls, the control board switches the element through relays. A technician tests the switch or relay and checks the wiring for heat damage. An element that will not turn off is a fire risk; switch off the breaker and do not use the range until it is repaired.
Repair cost
| Repair | Typical range | Labor |
|---|---|---|
| Range surface element and switch replacement | $180–$440 | Light |
| Range control board replacement | $300–$720 | Moderate |
| Range touchpad / user interface replacement | $250–$550 | Light |
Typical total ranges for the Las Vegas area, parts and labor included. The final cost depends on diagnosis, the exact model, parts availability and whether other damage is found.
When to call for diagnosis
Call for service if an element stays cold after a reseat and swap test, if terminals look burned, or immediately if an element will not turn off.
