Whirlpool refrigerator freezer not freezing

A freezer that will not freeze has the same root causes as a warm refrigerator, but because the freezer is closest to the evaporator, a warm freezer points more directly at the cooling system: the condenser and its fan, the evaporator fan, the defrost system, the compressor or the sealed system. First rule out settings, an open door and blocked vents.

Quick checks first

  • Check the freezer setting against the value recommended in your owner's manual and confirm no vacation or demo mode is active.
  • Make sure the freezer door or drawer closes fully; an ice bin or a package caught in the slide rails is enough to hold it open.
  • Keep food away from the freezer air vents and do not pack the freezer so tightly that air cannot move.
  • Check the base grille and the space behind the refrigerator for blocked airflow or heavy dust.
  • Notice whether the fresh-food section is also warm; that detail helps a technician narrow the cause.

Settings, door closure and loading Owner check

Built-in service documentation starts with a control set too warm. After that, look for anything that keeps warm, humid air flowing in: a drawer that does not close all the way, a torn gasket, or a door left ajar after restocking. A freezer filled with unfrozen food can take a day to recover, so judge after things settle. If the freezer is only soft near the door, airflow or a seal is more likely than a cooling failure.

Condenser and room temperature Owner check

Heat leaves through the condenser at the bottom or back of the cabinet. Dust buildup, a blocked grille or a refrigerator pushed tight into an enclosure all raise the operating pressure and reduce capacity, and the freezer shows it first because it needs the coldest coil temperature. Las Vegas garages can stay well above 100°F in summer, which is beyond what many indoor refrigerators are designed to handle; if the unit lives in the garage, that alone can explain a soft freezer.

Evaporator and condenser fans Technician

Built-in service documentation lists an evaporator fan that is not running and a condenser fan that is not running as causes of a warm freezer. Without the evaporator fan, cold stays trapped at the coil; without the condenser fan, the system cannot shed heat. Newer electronic models watch fan speed and may store a fan code. A technician checks both fans in a service test and looks for ice or debris touching the blades.

Defrost system Technician

Frost blocking the evaporator is listed in the documentation for a warm freezer. When the defrost heater, its thermostat or sensor, or the defrost control fails, the coil slowly ices over and airflow drops week by week. A frosted freezer back panel, frost on the evaporator cover, or ice on the fan blade are typical signs. Some models store a defrost heater code. A technician checks the defrost circuit and finds out why the coil is not clearing before replacing anything.

Freezer sensor and main control Technician

On electronic models the control decides when to run the compressor from a freezer temperature sensor. A sensor that drifts, an open wire or reversed connections make the control regulate to the wrong temperature. Built-in service documentation lists the freezer sensor, reversed sensor wiring and the main control. Many models report an open or shorted sensor with a code, but a sensor that is simply inaccurate may not trigger one, so the reading is compared with a reference thermometer.

This stage requires professional testing. Full diagnosis involves hazards such as live line voltage, gas, a sealed refrigerant system or microwave high voltage. Do not attempt it yourself.

Compressor and inverter Professional only

If the fans run but the compressor stays off, or it starts and trips off, the start relay and overload or the inverter board on variable-speed models come into question, along with the compressor itself. The built-in documentation lists both the compressor and the inverter for a warm freezer. These checks involve live electrical testing, so this requires professional testing.

Sealed system Professional only

A compressor that runs continuously with a coil that is only partly frosted suggests a refrigerant leak or a restriction. Only a certified technician should open the system; R600a is flammable and R134a must be recovered under EPA rules. Sealed-system repairs are major, so a confirmed diagnosis comes before any decision.

If your Whirlpool refrigerator shows one of these codes, start with its page:

Repair cost

RepairTypical rangeLabor
Refrigerator door gasket replacement$200–$510Light
Refrigerator condenser fan motor replacement$190–$400Light
Refrigerator evaporator fan motor replacement$200–$430Moderate
Refrigerator defrost system repair$230–$500Moderate
Refrigerator temperature sensor replacement$180–$340Light
Refrigerator main control board replacement$300–$750Moderate
Refrigerator compressor replacement Sealed system$900–$1,980Major
Refrigerator compressor start relay and overload replacement$180–$370Light

Typical total ranges for the Las Vegas area, parts and labor included. The final cost depends on diagnosis, the exact model, parts availability and whether other damage is found.

When to call for diagnosis

Call for service if the freezer stays above freezing for more than a day with correct settings, if frost covers the back panel, or if the compressor does not run. Move frozen food to a cooler or another freezer.
