Inglis washer not draining

A washer that won't drain is first checked for something blocking the water's path: a kinked or badly installed drain hose, a slow house drain, excess suds, or debris at the pump. If those are clear, the remaining suspects are the drain pump itself, its wiring, or the main control, which need internal diagnosis.

Quick checks first

  • Look along the drain hose behind the washer for kinks or a section crushed against the wall.
  • Check that the hose hangs loosely in the standpipe or laundry tub and is not taped, sealed or pushed deep into the pipe.
  • If water backs up or gurgles out of the standpipe, the house drain is slow and the washer may be fine.
  • Use HE detergent only, in the amount the label gives for your load size.
  • On a front-load model with a small access door at the bottom front, clean the drain pump filter as the owner's manual describes; have towels and a shallow pan ready.
  • Unplug the washer for one minute, then run a Drain & Spin cycle with the drum empty.

Drain hose installation and the house drain Owner check

The service documentation checks the drain hose installation before anything else. A hose pushed too far into the standpipe, or sealed airtight into it, can siphon or trap air and slow draining. A hose crushed behind the cabinet restricts flow even when it looks connected. Also consider the house side: a standpipe that overflows or gurgles while the washer pumps points to a partly clogged household drain line, which no washer repair will fix. Running the sink or tub nearby and watching for slow drainage is a quick way to tell the two apart.

Too much detergent or the wrong kind Owner check

Heavy suds drain slowly and cushion the pump, and on many models the control slows or pauses the drain while it tries to clear them. Regular, non-HE detergent in a high-efficiency washer causes this, and so can simply using too much HE detergent with soft water. Signs are foam visible in the tub or drum at the end of the cycle and a soapy film on clothes. Running a rinse with no detergent and cutting back the dose shows whether suds were the problem.

Front-load drain pump filter Owner check

Applies to: Front-load washer

Front-load washers catch coins, hair ties, buttons and lint in a filter in front of the drain pump. On models with an owner access door at the bottom front, the owner's manual explains how to drain the residual water and clean this filter, and the service documentation lists it right after the hose checks. A packed filter produces exactly this symptom: the pump runs and hums, but little water moves. Expect a significant amount of water to come out when the filter is opened. Models without an access door need the filter or pump reached from inside the cabinet, which is service work.

Debris under the wash plate (top-load) Technician

Applies to: Top-load washer

On top-load washers, small items such as socks, coins and hair pins can slip between the basket and the outer tub and collect in the tub sump under the impeller or wash plate, right at the pump inlet. The service documentation lists this sump check after the hose checks. Reaching it means removing the wash plate and sometimes the basket, which is level 2 work. A clue is a pump that runs normally but drains in fits, or a clicking or grinding noise during drain.

Drain pump and its wiring Technician

The drain pump is a small motor with an impeller. If the control powers it and it does not turn, the cause can be a jammed or broken impeller, an open motor winding, or a loose connection between the pump and the main control. A pump that hums without moving water suggests a jam; complete silence during drain suggests no power is reaching it. A technician confirms this by running the pump from the service diagnostic mode and checking the harness and pump circuit before deciding whether the pump needs replacement.

Level sensing and the main control Technician

The washer decides that draining is finished by watching the water level through a pressure hose and sensor. A pinched or plugged pressure hose can make the control believe water is still present, so it keeps pumping or stops with a long-drain code. The main control is listed last in the service documentation: it switches power to the pump and reads the level, and it is suspected only after the pump, harness and level sensing check out.

What the service documentation checks on Inglis platforms

For this symptom, the manufacturer's troubleshooting tables list causes in a specific order. Here is that order, in our words, for the Inglis platforms with the most models:

PlatformDocumented check order
Top-load washer platform, documentation from about 2016
e.g. ITW4671EW, ITW4771EW, ITW4971EW
Drain hose installation → Drain pump and pump inlet → Wiring and connectors → Main control board
Top-load washer platform, documentation from about 2014
e.g. ITW4671DQ, ITW4771DQ, ITW4971DQ
Drain hose installation → Drain pump and pump inlet → Wiring and connectors → Main control board
Front-load washer platform, documentation from about 2019
e.g. IFW5900HW
Drain hose installation → Drain pump and pump inlet → Wiring and connectors
Top-load washer platform, documentation from about 2010
e.g. ITW4300XQ

Error codes linked to this problem

If your Inglis washer shows one of these codes, start with its page:

Repair cost

RepairTypical rangeLabor
Washer drain pump replacement$180–$420Moderate
Washer water-level pressure sensor repair$180–$350Light
Washer main control board replacement$300–$720Moderate
Top-load washer agitator or wash plate repair$180–$350Light

Typical total ranges for the Las Vegas area, parts and labor included. The final cost depends on diagnosis, the exact model, parts availability and whether other damage is found.

When to call for diagnosis

Call for service if the hose, house drain, detergent and (on front-loaders) the filter are all fine but the washer still holds water, or if the pump is silent or only hums during drain.
