What the dishwasher is detecting

A float rides on the water in the tub or in a pan under the dishwasher, depending on the model. If it rises far enough to open its switch, the control stops filling, drains, and stores this code as a protection against flooding.

Causes listed for this condition

In the order the service documentation checks them. Documented causes come from the manufacturer's service documentation for these platforms; possible causes are based on how the system works; unconfirmed marks common assumptions that the documentation does not support.

  1. Documented The float or overfill switch stuck in its raised position, often from an item under the float, or a dishwasher that is not level.
  2. Documented A drain hose check valve that does not seal, so drained water comes back in and raises the level.
  3. Documented A fill valve stuck open mechanically, or the control's fill valve switching part shorted so water keeps coming.
  4. Documented Too many suds.
  5. Documented An open fuse on the control that feeds the fill valve and other loads.

Safe checks you can make

  • If your model has a float cap inside the tub near the front corner, make sure nothing (a utensil, a piece of food) is sitting on or under it and that it moves up and down freely.
  • Use only automatic-dishwasher detergent. Hand dish soap, even a small squirt, makes heavy suds that a dishwasher cannot handle; if that happened, run a rinse with the door shut a few times to clear it.
  • Look along the floor in front of the dishwasher and in the cabinet under the sink for water, and mention anything you find to the technician.
  • If water keeps entering the tub with the door open or the dishwasher off, turn off its water supply valve under the sink and switch off its breaker.

Further diagnosis requires opening the appliance. Beyond the owner checks, diagnosis involves removing panels, testing components and checking wiring. We describe what a technician investigates, not how to do it yourself.

What a technician checks

  • Checks the float and switch for free movement and the dishwasher for level.
  • Tests whether the drain loop check valve lets water back in.
  • Checks whether water flows with the door open, which points to a valve stuck open, versus only during a cycle, which points to the control.
  • Checks the control fuse for the fill circuit.

Typical repairs and cost

Depending on what diagnosis finds, this code can lead to one of these repairs:

RepairTypical rangeLabor
Dishwasher water inlet valve replacement$180–$360Light
Dishwasher drain pump replacement$180–$400Moderate
Dishwasher main control board replacement$260–$590Moderate

Typical total ranges for the Las Vegas area, parts and labor included. The final cost depends on diagnosis, the exact model, parts availability and whether other damage is found.

Can you keep using it?

Stop using it until it is checked. Stop using the dishwasher until the cause is found. An overfill condition can mean water on the floor and in the cabinetry. If water keeps coming in, shut off the supply valve and the breaker.

Repair or replace?

A fault code alone rarely justifies replacing a dishwasher. Most 6-4 repairs involve a single component once diagnosed. Replacement becomes worth considering when the unit is near the end of its typical 9–12-year life and the diagnosed repair is a major one. See the repair-or-replace guide.
