KitchenAid dishwasher leaking

A dishwasher leak is traced by where and when the water appears. Suds from the wrong detergent, a unit that is not level, and steam escaping when the door is opened hot are owner-level causes the service documentation lists. Water under the unit from connections, the door gasket, the vent or a pump seal needs service.

Quick checks first

  • Use only automatic dishwasher detergent; hand dish soap causes heavy suds and leaks.
  • Check that the dishwasher is level side to side and not tilted forward.
  • Wipe the door gasket and the tub edge; look for food or a utensil holding the door slightly open.
  • After a cycle, wait a few minutes before opening and closing the door while the tub is hot.
  • Check under the sink for drips at the supply valve and drain connections.

Suds Owner check

Too many suds push foam past the door gasket and vent. Hand dish soap, laundry detergent, or a rinse of dishes with soap still on them cause it. The documentation lists suds among the leak causes and in the error table. Run a cycle with no detergent to clear the foam.

Leveling and door seal Owner check

If the dishwasher leans forward, water surges over the front lip of the tub during the wash, as the documentation describes; it may also log a float error. A gasket that is torn, pinched or coated with soil does not seal, and items that hang through the rack can hold the door open slightly.

Steam from the vent Owner check

Opening the door on a hot tub and closing it again quickly creates a pressure surge that can push droplets out of the vent duct, according to the documentation. The fix is to leave the door open for a few minutes. Drips onto the cabinet face can also come from steam condensing on the counter edge.

Connections under the dishwasher Technician

The documentation checks the door and tub gasket and all water connections under the unit. The inlet valve fitting, the drain hose clamp and the pump seals can all drip. Water appearing at the front corners after a cycle can come from inside; checking requires removing the lower panel with power off.

Vent and fan Technician

On models with an active vent or drying fan, the documentation lists a vent that will not close properly and a fan fault as leak causes, since moisture escapes where it should not. The vent is driven by a small wax motor, and testing it and the fan is technician work.

What the service documentation checks on KitchenAid platforms

For this symptom, the manufacturer's troubleshooting tables list causes in a specific order. Here is that order, in our words, for the KitchenAid platforms with the most models:

PlatformDocumented check order
Dishwasher platform, documentation from about 2012
e.g. KDFE304DBL, KDFE304DBT, KDFE304DSS
Drive or pump motor → Detergent type or amount → Exhaust vent restriction

Error codes linked to this problem

If your KitchenAid dishwasher shows one of these codes, start with its page:

Repair cost

Typical total ranges for the Las Vegas area, parts and labor included. The final cost depends on diagnosis, the exact model, parts availability and whether other damage is found.

When to call for diagnosis

Turn off the water under the sink and call for service if water appears under the dishwasher, or if leaks continue with correct detergent and a level unit.

Model-specific information

Causes and codes differ by platform. Look up your model for its exact fault-code list, or start from a popular model:
