Maytag laundry center not spinning
If the washer section of a laundry center won't spin, the documentation starts with the lid: it must be closed and the lid lock must engage. Next come the drive wiring, motor, shifter and control. If it is the dryer drum that won't turn, the belt, thermal fuse, door switch and motor are the documented checks.
Quick checks first
- Close the washer lid firmly and check that nothing is caught between the lid and the cabinet.
- Redistribute the load; one heavy item on one side can prevent spin.
- Check for water left in the tub; the washer will not spin until it drains.
- Use HE detergent in the recommended amount and run a Rinse & Spin.
- For the dryer drum, close the door firmly and listen for the motor when you press Start.
Lid and lid lock Owner check
The washer does not spin unless the lid is closed and locked. The documentation lists lid interference, a lock that cannot close, and the lid lock solenoid first. On a laundry center the lid opens under the dryer section, and items stored on top of the washer area or a bent lid can stop it from seating.
Load balance and suds Owner check
An unbalanced load or heavy suds makes the control limit or cancel spin to protect the machine. The documentation for long cycles lists both. Rearranging the load and cutting detergent are the first things to try before suspecting parts. A single heavy item, such as a bath mat, can trigger it in a compact washer.
Water left in the tub Owner check
The washer will not spin while it senses water above a set level, so a drain problem shows up as a spin problem. If clothes come out soaking and water is visible in the tub, start with the drain hose and standpipe described in the not-draining guide. If the tub is empty and the clothes are only damp, the drain is working and the spin itself is the issue.
Drive wiring, motor and shifter Technician
With the lid confirmed, the documentation checks the harness between the control and the drive system, then the motor and the shifter in a spin test. A shifter stuck in the agitate position gives a washer that washes but will not spin. A motor that does not run in spin points to the motor or its circuit. These are technician checks.
Dryer drum not turning Technician
For the dryer section, the documentation checks the drive belt, the thermal fuse, the door switch and the motor. A motor that runs while the drum stays still points to the belt; a dryer that will not start at all points to the circuit. A thermal fuse opens when the exhaust overheats, so the vent should be checked if it is found open. Testing the motor circuit is service work.
