Maytag laundry center won't start

When a laundry center won't start, first decide which section is dead. If neither the washer nor the dryer responds, check the breaker and power cord; if only the washer fails, check the lid, and if only the dryer, the door. The documentation then checks the keypad, the door or lid switch, and the controls.

Quick checks first

  • Check the breaker or fuses; electric laundry centers use a double breaker.
  • Washer: close the lid firmly. Dryer: close the door until it latches, then press and hold Start.
  • Look for a control lock or delay-start setting on the panel.
  • Unplug the unit for one minute, or switch the breaker off and on, to reset the controls.

Power to the unit Owner check

The documentation starts with power at the outlet, breakers, fuses and junction box. On many laundry centers both sections share one supply cord, so if both are dead the problem is upstream. It also notes that a fuse or breaker that trips again and again can point to a motor fault, which needs professional testing.

Which section is dead Owner check

A laundry center is two appliances in one cabinet, so the first question is whether both sections fail or only one. If both are dark, the shared supply is suspect: breaker, outlet or power cord. If the dryer works but the washer does not, the washer lid, its controls or its wiring are the focus, and the reverse points to the dryer door, belt, thermal fuse or motor. Noting which lights come on helps the technician start in the right place.

Washer lid and dryer door Owner check

The washer will not start with the lid open or a lid lock that cannot close; the dryer will not start unless its door is fully closed against the latch. The documentation lists these right after power. Check that clothing is not caught at either opening.

Keypad and control Technician

If power is present and the doors are closed, the documentation checks the user interface and the control. Stuck keys, a disconnected keypad or a control not seated correctly in the console can all make the panel ignore input. These checks need the console opened.

Dryer motor circuit Technician

For the dryer, a broken belt, an open thermal fuse or a motor fault stops the cycle from starting, as the documentation's no-start table lists after the door switch. The thermal fuse is a sign of past overheating, so the vent is checked too.
