Maytag range oven door locked
An oven door that stays locked may simply be finishing a self-clean or steam-clean cycle: the lock stays engaged until the cavity cools to a safe temperature, which can take an hour or more. If it stays locked when the oven is cool, a power reset often releases it; a lock that still will not move points to the latch motor, its switches or the control, which may set an F5 code.
Quick checks first
- If the oven just ran self-clean, let it cool completely; the lock releases on its own once the cavity is cool.
- Press Cancel or Off and wait several minutes for the lock motor to run.
- Reset power at the circuit breaker: switch it off for a minute, then back on, and wait for the lock to cycle.
- Do not force the door; prying can break the latch and the hinges, and the cavity may still be very hot.
- Note the code on the display if one appears.
Normal lock during cleaning Owner check
Self-clean heats the cavity far above cooking temperature, so the latch locks before heating and does not release until the oven has cooled. The control ignores door commands during this time on purpose. After a self-clean, allow at least an hour before expecting the door to open. A steam-clean or low-temperature clean also locks the door on some models, for a shorter time.
Power reset Owner check
If the lock stayed engaged after a power interruption or a cancelled cycle, the control may have lost track of the latch position. Turning the breaker off and on lets it re-check the latch, and many controls drive the lock motor to the open position at startup once the oven is cool.
Latch motor and switches Technician
The latch assembly has a motor that moves the lock and switches that tell the control where the lock is and whether the door is closed. Service documentation lists F5E0 for door and latch switch signals that do not agree and F5E1 for a latch that does not operate. A broken latch link, a failed motor or a switch that does not change state leaves the door locked or prevents clean cycles. A technician checks the latch through the control's diagnostics.
Control board Technician
If the latch assembly works but never receives a command, the control output or the harness may be at fault. Heat from repeated self-clean cycles can damage wiring near the latch. A technician confirms the command before replacing a board.
When the door is stuck shut on a hot oven Technician
If the oven stayed hot for a long time with the door locked and the controls dead, a thermal cutout may have opened. That makes the oven appear dead and the lock unable to move. Keep the door closed, switch off the breaker and have the oven checked; opening the door on a cavity at cleaning temperature can cause burns or a flash fire from residue.

If your Maytag range shows one of these codes, start with its page:
Repair cost
| Repair | Typical range | Labor |
|---|---|---|
| Oven door lock motor and latch replacement | $220–$470 | Moderate |
| Range control board replacement | $300–$720 | Moderate |
Typical total ranges for the Las Vegas area, parts and labor included. The final cost depends on diagnosis, the exact model, parts availability and whether other damage is found.
When to call for diagnosis
Call for service if the door stays locked on a cool oven after a power reset, or if an F5 code returns.
