Repair or replace a washer?
A washer typically lasts about 10–13 years. Whether a repair is worth it depends on what failed, what it costs compared with a new unit, and the condition of the rest of the appliance.
Pumps, valves, lid and door locks, belts and suspension parts are moderate repairs worth doing at almost any age. Front-load tub bearing and top-load gearcase jobs are the expensive ones and deserve a close look at age and overall condition first.
What to weigh
- Age compared with the typical lifespan range
- Whether the failure is a moderate part (pump, valve, lock) or a major one (bearings, gearcase, motor plus control)
- Condition of the tub, suspension and cabinet (rust, prior leaks)
- Front-load vs top-load: front-load bearing failures can approach the price of a new washer
- Any remaining manufacturer coverage on major parts
