Roper washer not agitating or washing
A top-load washer that fills but won't agitate is often working as designed: impeller models move the load gently with little water, and the lid must be closed and locked before washing starts. If the lid and load are fine, the documented causes are the drive belt, the shifter, the motor or speed sensing, the wiring, and finally the main control.
Quick checks first
- Close the lid fully and check that nothing is caught between the lid and the cabinet.
- Watch a full cycle: impeller washers often pause, sense the load and move it slowly rather than sloshing.
- Do not overload. A tightly packed basket cannot turn over and looks like no agitation.
- Unplug the washer for one minute, plug it back in and run a short cycle with a small load.
Normal impeller wash action Owner check
High-efficiency top-load washers without a tall agitator use a low wash plate and much less water. They spend time sensing the load, add water in steps and move clothes with short, gentle strokes. Owners used to older machines often mistake this for no agitation. The service documentation even asks whether water covers the impeller, since too much water reduces the rubbing action these washers rely on. Check the cycle in the owner's manual before assuming a fault.
Lid lock must confirm Owner check
Many top-load washers lock the lid before agitating. If the lock does not engage, or reports open because of interference, the washer waits or stops instead of washing. The documentation lists the lid lock right after the water level check. A flashing lid-lock light or repeated clicking from the lid area are signs to look at this circuit, which requires service testing.
Drive belt Technician
On belt-drive models a slipping or broken belt lets the motor spin without moving the wash plate. You may hear the motor hum or run with no motion, or smell hot rubber. The belt is underneath the washer and is inspected by a technician; some models are direct drive and have no belt.
Shifter Technician
The shifter changes the drive between agitate and spin. When it sticks in the spin position, the basket and wash plate turn together and the load is not scrubbed, so the washer seems to spin slowly instead of washing. The documentation tests the shifter on its own before blaming the motor, and a shifter fault code may be stored when it does not reach the commanded position.
Motor, speed sensing and agitator parts Technician
If the drive is shifted correctly, the next checks are the motor circuit and the tachometer signal the control uses to confirm movement. A missing speed signal makes the control stop the motor. On washers with a tall agitator, worn agitator dogs or a stripped coupling let the motor turn while the agitator top stays still, which is a mechanical repair rather than an electrical one.
Main control Technician
The main control commands agitation and reads the speed signal. It is listed last and is replaced only after the lid lock, belt, shifter, motor and harness have been verified, because each of those failures can make the control appear faulty.
What the service documentation checks on Roper platforms
For this symptom, the manufacturer's troubleshooting tables list causes in a specific order. Here is that order, in our words, for the Roper platforms with the most models:
| Platform | Documented check order |
|---|---|
| Top-load washer platform, documentation from about 2019 e.g. RTW3005TW, RTW4519PW | Lid or door switch / lock → Drive belt → Wiring and connectors → Shifter → Drive or pump motor → Main control board |
| Top-load washer platform, documentation from about 2016 e.g. RTW4516FW, RTW4645EW | Lid or door switch / lock → Drive belt → Wiring and connectors → Shifter → Drive or pump motor → Main control board |
| Top-load washer platform, documentation from about 2013 e.g. RTW4740YQ | Lid or door switch / lock → Drive belt → Wiring and connectors → Shifter → Drive or pump motor → Main control board |
Error codes linked to this problem
If your Roper washer shows one of these codes, start with its page:
Repair cost
| Repair | Typical range | Labor |
|---|---|---|
| Top-load washer lid lock replacement | $180–$370 | Light |
| Washer drive belt replacement | $180–$330 | Light |
| Top-load washer shifter replacement | $220–$460 | Moderate |
| Washer drive motor replacement | $300–$720 | Heavy |
| Top-load washer agitator or wash plate repair | $180–$350 | Light |
| Top-load washer gearcase / transmission replacement | $400–$880 | Major |
| Washer main control board replacement | $300–$720 | Moderate |
Typical total ranges for the Las Vegas area, parts and labor included. The final cost depends on diagnosis, the exact model, parts availability and whether other damage is found.
When to call for diagnosis
Have it diagnosed if the washer fills and sits still through a full cycle with the lid closed, if you hear the motor running with no movement, or if a lid-lock, shifter or motor code appears.
