Roper washer won't start
A washer that won't start either has no power, has a feature turned on that blocks starting, or cannot confirm that the lid or door is closed and locked. If the display is dark, check the outlet and breaker first; if it lights but ignores Start, check control lock, the lid or door, and the start button routine before suspecting the controls.
Quick checks first
- If the display is dark, check the breaker or fuse, and test the outlet with a lamp.
- Press and hold Start for a few seconds; many models need a long press.
- Look for a lock icon. Control lock is turned off by pressing and holding the key the owner's manual names.
- Open the lid or door, then close it firmly. Some washers will not start a new cycle until the lid or door has been opened since the last one.
- Check whether a delay-start time is set.
- Unplug the washer for one minute and plug it back in.
No power at all Owner check
With no lights or display, the service documentation begins at the house: the outlet, breaker, fuse and, where present, the junction box. A tripped GFCI outlet elsewhere in the laundry room can also cut power. Next comes the power cord and its connection to the control, which a technician checks. If a breaker trips again as soon as the washer runs, stop using it; that points to a short in a motor or wiring that needs professional testing.
Control lock and other features Owner check
Many models have a control lock that ignores key presses, intended to keep children from starting the washer. Newer front-load documentation lists it first in the no-start check. A delay-start setting or a cycle that is paused also looks like a dead start button. Check the display for icons and the owner's manual for the key combination, then try again.
Lid or door not confirmed Owner check
The washer will not begin until the lid or door is closed, and on most models locked. Interference from clothing, a misaligned strike, or a lock that does not engage stops the start. Some front-load models also refuse to start after several cycles in a row if the door has not been opened in between, as a check that the door switch is not stuck. The documentation then tests the lock itself, which is service work.
Keypad, display and connections Technician
If power is present but keys do nothing, the documentation looks at the connection between the main control and the user interface, then the interface board itself. A single stuck key can block all other input, and some models store a stuck-key code. Moisture on the console from a leak or steam can cause the same behavior. These checks require removing console parts.
Main control Technician
The main control is checked last. On some models the documentation also checks that the control is seated properly in the console, since a misfitted board does not respond to the buttons. A technician confirms supply and communication between boards before deciding the control has failed.
