Roper washer stops mid-cycle
A washer that stops mid-cycle has hit a condition it cannot get past: water not leaving fast enough, a fill that takes too long, too many suds, an unbalanced load, or a lid or door that reads open. Some pauses are normal soak or sensing steps. If a code appears, it names the condition the control detected.
Quick checks first
- Note any code or flashing light before resetting; it tells you which step failed.
- Check for water left in the tub, and see the not-draining guide if there is.
- Make sure both faucets are fully open and the fill hoses are not kinked.
- Redistribute the load and reduce detergent if suds are visible.
- Check whether the cycle is only paused; press Start again after opening and closing the lid or door.
Normal pauses Owner check
Modern washers pause during a cycle to sense the load, soak, let suds settle or redistribute clothes. A quiet tub for a minute or two with the display still counting is not a fault. Opening the door or lid, or a brief power interruption, also pauses many models until Start is pressed again. Check the owner's manual for how your cycle is supposed to behave.
Drain, fill and suds conditions Owner check
Applies to: Top-load washer
Many mid-cycle stops are timeouts. If the water level does not drop within the allowed drain time, or rise within the allowed fill time, the control stops and stores a code. On some top-load models a long fill starts a pump-out, and the documentation notes that the drain pump may keep running until the user holds Start to clear it. Heavy suds also cause the control to stop and flush. The not-draining and not-filling guides cover these causes in detail.
Unbalanced loads Owner check
When the control cannot balance the load it may run long, retry, or end without a full spin. On some models this appears as a pause code. Mixed loads and avoiding single heavy items prevent it; repeated pauses with balanced loads point to suspension or speed sensing.
Lid or door signal and power Owner check
If the lid or door switch momentarily reads open, the control stops for safety. Worn lock contacts, a sagging lid, or a loose connection can cause this. A brief power drop, such as a loose plug or a shared circuit tripping, also ends the cycle, and some models record a loss-of-power code. Plugging the washer into its own outlet, not an extension cord, rules out the supply.
Motor overheating and drag (front-load) Technician
Applies to: Front-load washer
The front-load documentation lists motor overheating as a separate symptom. The first cause it gives is mechanical friction, such as an item trapped between the drum and tub, followed by the motor wiring and the motor itself. The motor's protection stops the cycle until it cools, so the washer may resume after a rest and then stop again. This needs internal inspection.
Pressure sensing and control faults Technician
Applies to: Top-load washer
A pressure system fault, where the control receives an impossible water-level reading, stops the cycle on many models. The documentation ties a pump that keeps running to this condition as well as to the long-fill pump-out. A failing main control can also reset during a cycle. Technicians read the stored codes in the service mode to see which stop happened first.

Typical total ranges for the Las Vegas area, parts and labor included. The final cost depends on diagnosis, the exact model, parts availability and whether other damage is found.
When to call for diagnosis
Call for service if the washer stops at the same point every cycle, stops with a code that returns after a reset, or stops with water in the tub that will not drain.
