Roper washer F0E5: off-balance load

F0E5 means the washer detected that the load was unevenly distributed in the basket and could not spin it safely.

Off-balance load

Generally yes

What the washer is detecting

The control watches how evenly the basket accelerates and, on some models, a motion sensor on the tub. When the load stays lopsided after the washer tries to redistribute it, F0E5 is stored.

Causes listed for this condition

In the order the service documentation checks them. Documented causes come from the manufacturer's service documentation for these platforms; possible causes are based on how the system works; unconfirmed marks common assumptions that the documentation does not support.

  1. Documented Laundry bunched on one side, a tightly packed load, or a single heavy item washed alone.
  2. Documented Weak suspension that lets the tub move too much during spin.

Safe checks you can make

  • Spread the load evenly around the wash plate or agitator instead of piling it to one side, and avoid washing a single heavy item such as a rug or one pair of jeans alone.
  • With the washer unplugged and empty, push down on one edge of the basket and let go. It should settle after about one bounce; repeated bouncing suggests worn suspension.
  • Check that the washer sits level and firmly on all four feet and does not rock.

Further diagnosis requires opening the appliance. Beyond the owner checks, diagnosis involves removing panels, testing components and checking wiring. We describe what a technician investigates, not how to do it yourself.

What a technician checks

  • Inspects the suspension rods, springs or dampers for wear.
  • Checks the tub and drive for other causes of excess motion.

Typical repairs and cost

Depending on what diagnosis finds, this code can lead to one of these repairs:

RepairTypical rangeLabor
Washer suspension rods, springs or dampers replacement$180–$440Moderate

Typical total ranges for the Las Vegas area, parts and labor included. The final cost depends on diagnosis, the exact model, parts availability and whether other damage is found.

Can you keep using it?

Generally safe to keep using. Usually safe to keep using after rearranging the load. If F0E5 keeps showing on normal mixed loads, have the suspension inspected.

Repair or replace?

A fault code alone rarely justifies replacing a washer. Most F0E5 repairs involve a single component once diagnosed. Replacement becomes worth considering when the unit is near the end of its typical 10–13-year life and the diagnosed repair is a major one. See the repair-or-replace guide.
