Maytag washer F0E1: load detected during clean washer cycle

F0E1 means the washer sensed clothes or other weight in the drum while running the Clean Washer (tub cleaning) cycle, which must run empty.

What the washer is detecting

Before and during the cleaning cycle the control checks how hard the motor works to turn the drum. If the drum behaves as if it holds a load, the cycle stops and F0E1 is stored. Some displays show it as rL (remove load).

Causes listed for this condition

In the order the service documentation checks them. Documented causes come from the manufacturer's service documentation for these platforms; possible causes are based on how the system works; unconfirmed marks common assumptions that the documentation does not support.

  1. Documented Clothing, a towel or another item left in the drum when the Clean Washer cycle was started.
  2. Documented Something rubbing on the drum, such as an item caught between the drum and the outer tub, which makes the drum harder to turn.

Safe checks you can make

  • Open the door, take everything out of the drum (check the door seal folds for socks), close the door and restart the Clean Washer cycle.
  • Turn the empty drum slowly by hand. It should move smoothly without scraping or catching.

Further diagnosis requires opening the appliance. Beyond the owner checks, diagnosis involves removing panels, testing components and checking wiring. We describe what a technician investigates, not how to do it yourself.

What a technician checks

  • Confirms the drum turns freely and looks for items trapped between the drum and the outer tub.
  • Checks the drive system for added friction if the code returns with an empty drum.

Typical repairs and cost

Depending on what diagnosis finds, this code can lead to one of these repairs:

RepairTypical rangeLabor
Washer drive motor replacement$300–$720Heavy

Typical total ranges for the Las Vegas area, parts and labor included. The final cost depends on diagnosis, the exact model, parts availability and whether other damage is found.

Can you keep using it?

Generally safe to keep using. This is a usage message. Run the cleaning cycle with an empty drum; if it returns with nothing inside, have the drive checked before relying on the washer.

Repair or replace?

A fault code alone rarely justifies replacing a washer. Most F0E1 repairs involve a single component once diagnosed. Replacement becomes worth considering when the unit is near the end of its typical 10–13-year life and the diagnosed repair is a major one. See the repair-or-replace guide.
